Controversies or not, Barry Bonds will remain a stalwart in MLB. Apart from his game, the San Francisco Giants legend was also known for his unfiltered behavior with anyone. Whoever came his way, Bonds did not spare anyone, even if it was someone like a general manager of his first big league team.

Right from the start of his professional career, Bonds was a Power-hitter with outstanding hitting averages. But once, when his playing position was compromised, was shifted to another position. That is when the then-Pittsburgh Pirates slugger expressed his anger at Larry Doughty, who was the Pirates GM at the time.

The former Giants Power-hitter was famous for his short-temper attitude. Bonds was the first part of the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he went on to achieve most of his trophies with the San Francisco Giants. However, during these years, his journey with Pirates was not easy. According to Jeff Pearlman’s book Love Me, Hate Me, Barry Bonds had many disagreements with authorities. The general manager caused one of these by changing his position and comparing him to other hitters. Doughty talked about Barry’s 58 RBIs in comparison to other sluggers on page 110 of the book. Doughty pointed out Barry’s shortcomings in terms of work ethic, attitude, and performance with runners in scoring position.

The 14x All-Star was not someone to digest this without a reply. He told Rod Wright, his agent, ?These guys hit me leadoff all year and then complain that I don?t drive in runs,? He even complained of the GM playing the same dirty trick with another player Bonilla. They destroyed his reputation using the same technique, but in the case of Bonds, it didn’t work because Bonds was never been careful of his public image. However, once he told his agent, ?That?s some dirty bullshit right there“.

In Barry’s case, the outcome was not what the GM and authorities expected. The 7xMVP never tried to defend his image. The Sporting News reported, ?By flexing his jaws instead?of his biceps, [Bonds] is doing nothing to enhance his image.?

During this crisis period, most of his teammates didn’t stand beside him. Instead, they wanted him to accept the situation and “keep quiet.” However, later Bonds and Bonilla both survived in the baseball world gloriously, with several achievements. While this crisis period was going on, Bonds even thought of quitting Pirates.

Bonds eventually left the Pirates in 1993 and completed his MLB journey with the San Francisco Giants. After this incident, his agent stated, “He?s fed up. I talked with Barry, and he?s so irritated with the organization he doesn?t want to be a part of the Pirates. If he could be gone tomorrow, he would be happy.”?Bonds didn’t leave the team for this reason. He later broke the contract for payment issues and left.

Bonds and Bonilla later formed a strong line-up for Pirates. Despite the dirty trick the general manager played with them, both survived because of their talent and skills.
