Two New York greats started their career in New York and concluded their career in New York. Shortstop and five-time World Champion Derek Jeter made his New York Yankees debut in 1995. He became their captain in 2003 and retired in 2014. On the other hand, quarterback and two-time Super Bowl Champion, Eli Manning, made his New York Giants debut in 2004. And he retired after 15 years, in 2019.

Both Jeter and Manning spent their entire playing careers in New York City. Balanced against that, in 2014, when Derek Jeter approached his MLB retirement after 20 long years, Eli Manning spoke about the Yankee leader’s exit from the park, and how the torch would be passed to him.
What did Eli Manning say about Derek Jeter’s retirement?
Notably, after Derek Jeter’s retirement, Manning remained the most accomplished, longest-tenured athlete in New York. When asked about that in an interview from 2014, Eli Manning laughed, and denied the very existence of any such “torch.”

While talking about the greatness of Jeter’s career, he said, “I think we’re losing a superstar in Derek Jeter, a guy who’s been so good for so long and won championships and been a class act. He’s been the face of the New York Yankees. We’ll miss him.”
Manning continued to talk about the idea of replacing Jeter in New York. And he said, “You can’t replace him, and that’s not my job. My job is to try to win games for the Giants. And learn from the things Derek’s done well and the way he’s conducted himself. And he’ll always be a role model for me.”
