For a sports fan, there is no better feeling than catching a stray ball at a baseball game. The batter just hit a long ball and look, it’s gonna land somewhere in the audience. The crowds stand on their feet, everyone from kids to teens to adults trying to catch it during an MLB game. They stand on their tiptoes, stretching to their fullest height, hoping that just maybe luck will favor them. But alas, it was not to be so.
Countless stories are shared of lucky people who get to take home a ball or unlucky ones who risk losing a limb but still miss the ball. Sometimes the danger isn’t to one’s body but to something even more precious – the beverage in their hand. But it’s even sadder when the one losing the drink is not someone in the stands but the vendor himself.

At spring training on Saturday, Feb. 25th, it was the Astros vs Mets in a heated game. The Dusty Baker-led team won 4-2 against the Buck Showalter-led Mets and there was a particularly interesting moment during the game. A ball pitched by Zack Muckenhirn went straight into the stands when the Astros batter hit it. And as a vendor tried to catch it, he not only lost the ball but spilled beer cans out of his crate, too.

This beer incident was reminiscent of another viral moment from 2022 MLB season
That’s right, if one follows baseball, they may remember something similar from a May 2022 MLB game between the Guardians and Athletics. What happened was that a spectator tried to catch a rogue ball headed his way with a beer cup in his other hand. Being a pro baseballer was akin to playing with fire – not only did he not catch it, but the man also spilled almost all his beverage on the woman sitting next to him. And her snacks. Poor woman, poor nachos!

Lessons to take away from these two incidents – one’s hands should be empty when attempting a catch. It’s like most Little League coaches say, “catch with two hands.” Most people aren’t as athletic as they think they are!
