“That Causes Me Pain”: Mariah Carey Once Relieved the Trauma of Her Abusive Marriage Soon After Leaving MLB Icon Derek Jeter

Even at 53, iconic singer Mariah Carey remains one of a kind. Having won five Grammy awards, Carey has shown the world how special she is. However, her journey was not as easy as one might think. Up until 1998, the Rooftop singer was in an abusive marriage with the music producer Tommy Mottola. And according to her, dating the MLB great Derek Jeter, even for a short period, helped her understand that she needed to get out of the marriage.

Shortly after she broke up with Jeter, she sat for an interview where Carey reflected on the trauma she felt with her ex-husband. She also added how looking back at those moments once again made her feel afraid of Mottola. 

What did Mariah Carey say about her marriage?

During her marriage with Mottola, there were a few times when the singer was genuinely happy. With him, she had a sense of security that she had never felt before. The pleasant memories that she had from her wedding were of the vacations they went on together.

But the reality was completely opposite. In one of Mariah Carey’s archives interviews, she said, “Sometimes I look at the photos (of their vacations) and that causes me pain. I was raised in a total freedom of spirit, and with Tommy Mottola, it was the exact opposite. I made superhuman efforts. Because I was afraid of loosing, I did everything to keep it going. I would never have that I would be the one who’d leave. I was scared.”

The feeling of panic had gone when she met Derek Jeter. The Yankees young man made her realize that she was better off without him and deserved so much more from life. However, regardless of how much in love she was with Jeter, she did not break any of her weddings vows to be with him.

Carey became free of every tie to be with Jeter

Carey and Captain Clutch met each other during a party by Armani. Carey was present there with her ex-husband. At first, she did not like him, but as she got to know him more, she started to get attracted to Jeter.

Mimi could not meet Jeter openly. Therefore, she used to plan meeting with him secretly because she was afraid of her husband. But even then, she only took the next step in her relationship with Jeter once her divorce was finalized. Even though the relationship could not last longer, Carey has fond memories of her short time with the Hall of Famer.
