Some traditions are sacred. Times bring with them the winds of change, but every era in baseball follows some haloed rituals that remain untouched. It’s sacrilegious to see another copy of them, and as MLB knows, New York Yankees fans are unforgiving. One tradition that the Bronx has followed for decades is the roll call, and to see another team imitate it is blasphemy.
A few weeks ago, the Texas Rangers copied the call at Globe Life Park, invoking the wrath of New York. The rest of the league made fun of how easily trolled the Yankee fans were, but they still wanted to maintain tradition. The Philadelphia Phillies invoke the roll call this time, and Bronx baseball fans are unhappy. They have a warning to sound.

When Rangers fans mimicked the roll call, the Texas team went on a eight-game losing streak that they barely recovered from. Yankee fans felt it was the baseball gods dealing them a much-needed dose of karma and they were vindicated. This time, Talkin’ Yanks on Instagram has posted another video discussing the Phillies ‘stealing’ the tradition. They’re also here to give a stark reminder of what happened the last time this was tried.

“We got another team doing the roll call. This time it’s the Phillies. Listen, you wanna do the roll call, you wanna copy one of the best traditions in sports, something the Yankees have been doing for years? Do it at your own risk. The Rangers did the roll call and they lost nine games in a row” says the fan in the clip. The correct number is actually eight, which the caption of the post addresses.
“The Phillies are in the number one spot in the Wild Card, don’t extend the losing streak. There’s ramifications for your actions, folks. At least the Phillies have won something in their franchise though.”
While the Phillies have been on a great run this season, maybe fans have jinxed the team. They just defeated the LA Angels 12-7 in a wonderful offensive display, but there are still holes in their defense. Interestingly, it was a Yankees outfielder the team had their eye on a while ago.
Harrison Bader to Philly? Another Yankee Item Stolen
There are some great talents in the Yankees employ but unfortunately, 2023 seems to be the year everyone is slumping. Harrison Bader, a powerful presence in the outfield when he can healthily manage it, has been a great addition to the Pinstripes’ roster. But for some reason, the 29-year-old has spent more time on the IL than on the field this season and is having trouble with offensive production.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Yankees have placed him on waivers, so the Phillies are free to snatch him up should they want.

New York Yankees outfielder Harrison Bader has been placed on waivers, sources told ESPN.
Bader has slumped severely as of late, but he would cost less than $1 million for the final month of the season and could be claimed by Thursday.

There were trade rumors of the team going after Bader at the trade deadline back in July, but nothing came of them. Even now, there has been no conclusion to this saga.

But if Bader does get traded to Philadelphia, he will be another thing stolen from the Yankees by the Phillies. And the Bronx might not like it.
