For once, Hal Steinbrenner seems serious about his team. After a disastrous season, the New York Yankees are grasping at straws. Looking past the glaring injuries, even the farm system has collapsed. When the players are doing their best, who receives the blame? The majority owner wants it to be something other than his beloved front office, so he’s bringing in the big guns.

All year long, Bronx fans have demanded change. But Steinbrenner has made it clear that Brian Cashman is going nowhere. His contract keeps him with the Yankees until 2026, even though his age-old approaches need to be fixed. To investigate this problem, Hal uses more numbers to find a solution.

At the beginning of September, Steinbrenner told the Associated Press, “We’re going to take a very deep dive into everything we’re doing…This year was obviously unacceptable.” While of course promises have been made before, some are genuinely surprised to see the Yankees owner take responsibility. As assured, the Pinstripes’ management has hired a third-party company to audit them.

Jomboy’s latest podcast discusses what it essentially means as Jimmy O’Brien says, “They said they were gonna audit the analytics department, contract a third party. They did that, we don’t know the company. So even if they were to go on a run, they’re still getting audited.”

Jake Storiale chimes in, “Basically you’re just hiring a bunch of smart people to be like, ‘What are we doing wrong?'” For some fans, like Jake and Jimmy, it’s a bold move that might prove helpful.

“Come take a look at us, tell us how dumb we are,” says O’Brien. David Mendelsohn sums it up, “If you’re the company they’re asking you to tell them what’s wrong, and like specifically not hiring you to tell them everything’s fine. They want an answer.” But what will this answer ultimately be?

Everyone who knows the Yankees knows that Hal Steinbrenner is not fond of upending the status quo. While he has defended his manager before, the owner clearly favors Cashman over Aaron Boone. While a few players and coaches have been dealt with, who will be the ultimate scapegoat of this experiment?

As was feared throughout the season, the Bronx Bombers may actually avoid that. In a late-season rally, the Yankees have decided to end the year with some dignity and have climbed up to fourth in the AL East.

Avoiding what would be a losing record for the first time in 30 years, the injury-plagued roster is managing somehow. Shockingly, they may make the Wild Card, something no one thought was possible up until a few weeks ago.

Nevertheless, this sudden burst of inspiration is not a long-term solution. Now the question is, what will Hal Steinbrenner do?
