The grandest stage of them all, the World Baseball Classic, returned to the shores of the United States after six long years. The anticipation was high as the reigning champions, the US, took on Mexico in the long-awaited Pool C game. But what unfolded in the ballpark was nothing short of momentous. The game belonged entirely to the Mexican behemoths as they dominated the rhythm of the game from start to finish, leaving their rivals in the dust. The reigning champions were dethroned in their second game, and it wasn’t even close.

While the US fans were left wanting, the Mexicans were unbridled with joy. In the usual sports thrashing and mock humor that follows such a grand win, the baseball world has taken to Twitter to poke fun at the defeated opponents.

In a game that no one saw coming, Mexico triumphed over the reigning champions. From the very first innings, it was clear that Mexico was the team to beat, as they surged ahead and never looked back. By the third inning, it was all but certain that the day belonged to them, and their fans couldn’t be happier

As is often the case with sports fans, Mexico’s followers rubbed their victory in the faces of their US opponents. Some of the tweets might illicit a chuckle as a Twitter thread became a meme galore.

Some even suggested that baseball should be called “beisbol” in honor of the team’s win.

However, the tournament is far from over, and there are still a few more days of games to decide who will make it to the quarterfinals in their Pool. While Colombia and Canada are currently in lead, both Mexico and the US have one win and one loss each. 

Brief summary of the game between the teams: 

Pitcher Javier Assad shut down the US offense, allowing only one hit in three innings pitched. Batters Randy Arozarena and Joe Meneses led Mexico’s charge with their impressive hitting. Mexico extended their lead with each inning, leaving the US unable to mount any sort of comeback.
