Barry Bonds was a man driven by greatness. Yet, amidst the glittering accolades and awe-inspiring records, there was a hidden vulnerability. Surprisingly, Bonds often feared the sharp-witted jibes of reporters more than the absence of postseason success that eluded him throughout his remarkable journey in baseball.
While some have been more in the line of fire than others, the star’s encounters with even as much as the fans and his teammates has been the stuff of stories. However, we sometimes deify our heroes to the point where they are mere names, no longer the person behind them. Bonds’ meteoric rise to stardom earned him a monumental contract as a result. But it also bought with it some pitfalls. Although notable, this may have inadvertently made him a focal point of media attention. Says Bloom,”His MVP performance in 1992 with the Pirates and his monumental contract had made Bonds a target of media scrutiny.”Bloom recounts, “Since being called up by the Pirates, Bonds had long had an uncomfortable relationship with the press. Reporters alleged that Bonds treated them rudely, did not show up for interviews, and had a cold relationship with his teammates.”
And this only got worse with time. Says Bloom, “By 1993, their criticisms became louder, to the point that they almost overshadowed Bonds’ performance on the field.” Blooms account make clear that Bonds was never truly free from media shackles. While constantly subject to criticism and scrutiny, the star was never truly given the chance to prosper without a spotlight.
