After a very silent start to the MLB offseason, the competitiveness has again started to make its presence felt. With more teams expected to start their bid for a better 2024 with some high-stakes signings, everyone expects it to increase. However, to avert that, teams can make mutual trades and get what they want, and the Miami Marlins did just that.

Notably, the Marlins, who did not have a great 2023 playoffs, have understood the necessity of smart moves and have shown in their latest trade. Given the free agency will have top competition for players, the Marlins have chosen an interstate move with the Rays to start their off-season.

It was a deadline day for the teams to sign players under arbitration. Multiple teams made moves to keep the core intact by extending contracts, keeping the future in mind. However, many teams non-tendered their players, making them free agents this off-season. However, the Miami Marlins and the Tampa Bay Rays chose a different path and made a trade to fulfill their desires.

According to the latest update, both teams exchanged players with some cash arrangements for the future. A post confirmed this and read, The Marlins have acquired INF Vidal Brujan and RHP Calvin Faucher from the Rays in exchange for IF Erick Lara, RHP Andrew Lindsey, and cash considerations/a player to be named later, per a team announcement.”

Opting to sign players according to team preferences rather than relying on free agency can be seen as a strategic move. However, when considering players who may not have had a stellar MLB career, it raises valid questions.

Notably, Vidal Brujan has not performed at his best on the bigger stage, averaging 0.171 and 0.438. The same has been the story with Calvin Faucher, who has earned over 7 runs with only 25 Ks to his name. Similarly, Erick Lara and Andrew Lindsey, both are yet to have a first-hand experience of the bigger stage. However, it seems teams have considered the future before signing players and expect them to shine in the upcoming season.

The conclusion was not the favorable outcome for the Rays and the Marlins in 2023. Both the teams failed to do well in the playoffs and lost the World Series battle. To correct their path for the future, both teams have made a move with each other. Given that all traded players are young and have not reached their prime, there is a lot of scope for them. Moreover, during spring training, teams assess players, determining their roles within the organization, whether in the minor leagues or at the MLB level.
