Even though the number of teams has gone down, the value of Shohei Ohtani continues to skyrocket. Initially, it was expected that his contract would top out at $500 million owing to his elbow injury and subsequent surgery that led to suspicions over his pitching future. As of this moment, those worries seem to have vanished as his contract talks will not only touch that figure, but they might as well cross it by a large margin.

Comprehensive details regarding the discussions surrounding Shohei Ohtani’s potential deal have yet to be disclosed. But a few MLB insiders have speculated about this value. One of those biggest ones has hinted that Ohtani may have already received more than a few offers that are much higher than the $500 million contract.

While speculations are rife that Ohtani may decide by the end of this week, one wonders how much would his value be. Even though Shotime is notably not motivated solely by money, teams would have to splash out cash due to the massive competition that his free agency has created. Jon Heyman of the New York Post may have the answer to that question.

“Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani is believed to already have received multiple bids well north of $500 million, and some speculate he could even wind up as baseball’s first $600 million man — or come close, at least,” Heyman wrote in his recent article.

Heyman then listed reasons why Ohtani commands such strong figures. His equal domination while pitching and hitting might be a big reason but his superstardom is the biggest. There are estimations suggesting that Shohei Ohtani’s off-field value to the team could range between $20 million and $35 million. With such a huge income, no wonder teams are after him.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Chicago Cubs, and the Angels are the chief teams currently in the race. Heyman hinted at one more secret team that has chosen to stay hidden all this time.

The Giants appear as a dark horse among the rest due to their proximity to Anaheim. However, as reported finalists in the bidding process, the Giants must be prepared to make a substantial financial commitment, according to Heyman.
