Once a star pitcher for the New York Yankees, he finds himself pivoting in his career. Marred by setbacks that hindered his performance on the mound, the Yankees seem resolute to part ways with the hurler. Though a tough juncture, this 29-year-old’s free agency odds are anything but dim.

Having demonstrated immense potential during his tenure with the Yankees, the 2015 Yankees debutant’s track record has not gone unnoticed. Multiple teams from across MLB have expressed keenness in securing his services. They recognize the potential that could be tapped with the right environment and support despite the injuries. Proof? His rehab went great!

Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports that Luis Severino, an unrestricted free agent this winter, is back to throwing and is “feeling good“. Up to eight teams have reportedly expressed interest in signing Severino in 2024, but the Yankees are not among them, according to the report. Despite his potential and recovery from his injury, Luis will probably not be wearing pinstripes.

After making a start against the Milwaukee Brewers in September, Severino came down with a high-grade left oblique strain, forcing the Yankees to place him on the injured list, ending his 2023 season. That said, the Yankees, who had a miserable 82-80 record and finished fourth in the AL East, now incline toward employing young players rather than going with the tenured ones for the future.

The soon to be 30-year-old pitcher had a 4-8 record and a career-high 6.65 ERA in 19 games. Moreover, had 18 starts during his previous season with the Yankees. In addition to setting a career high with his 1.65 WHIP, his 79 strikeouts were the fewest since he started just 11 games in 2016. It’s probable that next season, he will have a new team to start over.

Where Did It All Go Downhill For Luis Severino With The Yankees?

Severino, who turns 30 in February, had high hopes for his contract extension with the Yankees. Before the 2019 season, general manager Brian Cashman signed homegrown talent ‘Sevy’ to a four-year, $40 million contract extension, hoping to have him as a mainstay of their starting rotation for years to come. But for him and the Yanks, 2023 was a major letdown.

Severino had a really premature exit due to his frequent injuries. This does not pose a great impression on the Yanks. That said, it is evident that the Bronx will welcome newer faces. Though the names of teams interested in Severino are not out yet, it would be interesting to see where he lands.
