The 2023 MLB season will be a memorable one. This season the underdog teams shattered the World Series journey of the favorites. While the Texas Rangers closed the door on Houston Astros’ strong lineup, The Arizona Diamondbacks stopped the dream run of the Philadelphia Phillies. However, in this process, they validated the once-made Crapshoot theory of the New York Yankees GM.

The postseason is unpredictable. Brian Cashman, after the Yankees’ 2019 season-ending, took this theory to justify the team?s performance. That year, The Yankees qualified for the ALCS, but Jose Altuve swept them away with his monster home run. However, four years later, the two World Series contender teams proved the significance of the theory.

The Crapshoot theory is not Cashman?s invention. He took it from the former GM of Oakland Athletics? Billy Beane. He coined the term, ?The playoffs are a crapshoot.? This basically means that the playoff games have nothing to do with a team’s lineup or overall performance. Winning all 162 games throughout the Regular season can do nothing if the team performs badly in a crucial game in the postseason.

For Cashman, the 2019 season of the Yankees was nothing less than a magnificent one, with 103 wins in the regular season. About the postseason failure, he commented, ?It just shows you how difficult it is to navigate through October.?

The crapshoot theory Cashman applied to justify that the Yankees ALCS lost in 2019 didn?t necessarily call for a change in the roster. However, four years later, the Rangers and the D-backs have proved this fact once again. They are the first-ever World Series contenders who combinedly won around 170 games in the regular season, with the Rangers winning 90 games and the D-backs 84. This is the least record in MLB history.

However, these two teams have taken down two heavy-weight teams, especially the Rangers. In the ALCS, they went head-to-head with the Houston Astros, who qualified with 106 wins. Shattering their World Series dreams, the Rangers prove that having a strong lineup doesn’t guarantee a spot in the World Series, just as Cashman had said. The Diamondbacks also won the NLCS Game 7 based on their rookie players, especially Corbin Carroll, who beat the star players of the Phillies like Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos.

Anyway, the Season of the Yankees only witnessed downfalls since 2019, with Cashman calling it a ?disaster? this season.

Though the Bronx Bombers? went through tough seasons throughout these years, 2023 was the worst. They didn?t even make it to the playoffs this year. During his interview, Cashman said, ?It?s been a disaster.?

He continued explaining his point, ?It?s definitely a shock. Certainly, I don?t think anybody on our side of the fence, from our player group, from our coaches, from our manager, or even outside the organization, would?ve predicted this.”
