When a name becomes famous, it’s written into the narrative of the world. But when two names become famous together and then experience an upheaval, history usually refuses to let them go. Rivalries are often fascinating things to observe because people get to watch the drama unfold live. It’s probably what happened to Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, who were famous friends turned enemies.

It’s been a few decades since news of their friendship turning sour hit the news, but it’s still a popular topic. Given, neither is an active player anymore, nor do they play as teammates. But baseball fans find it an intriguing topic because, for them, the duo has yet to settle everything civilly. Only the two of them know their true feelings on the matter. But Jeter’s wife Hannah once opened up about what advice she gave to her husband about approaching the situation.

When the Jeter-Rodriguez fiasco happened, the pair were in their 20s. Admittedly, it’s an age just past the cusp of adulthood when humans are still in the process of self-discovery. And going through it all with a spotlight on one’s face is not easy. The former Yankee captain handled fame in his own way, and Rodriguez in his own.

Discussing the state of their relationship in The Captain, ESPN’s docuseries on Jeter, Hannah gave her thoughts. “Alex and Derek obviously have a lot of history. There’s clearly some anger or hurt or something still there. But I still like to remind Derek that not everyone at that young age had that same ability to handle the press the way you did.”

She continued, “I think it would be probably good for them, at some point, without the cameras rolling, to actually have a real conversation. Because he’s in a different place in his life.” Indeed, everyone has matured over the years, so it would be a different conversation today than it would have been 20 years ago.

In the same episode, the Hall of Famer also addressed the issue. He gave an allowance to the age both players were back then, admitting that they probably could have played a more active role in taking control of the narrative.

“The thing is, it’s still a topic today. Someone will bring up his name and they’ll insinuate something going on with our relationship…And I mean, we were in our mid-20s. We allowed – I probably allowed the picture just to be painted by others for so many years. Some things change. My perspective, my outlook now has changed,” Jeter said.
