The New York Yankees entered 2023 looking to break their 13-year World Series drought. Instead, they left with one of the worst seasons in franchise history, finally forcing management to inspect itself. After Brian Cashman’s terrible decision-making and Hal Strinbrenner’s analytics obsession, something else might throw a wrench in their plans.

After a terrible 82-80 season, Bronx fans were calling for changes in the front office. Players may shoulder responsibility, but the roster construction in the first place is Cashman’s responsibility. Steinbrenner announced that he would employ a third-party company to analyze statistics. Apparently, there is even more family involved who approves of the numbers approach. Where does it leave the Bombers?

In 2023, the Yankees’ season ended early for the first time since 2016. With no October baseball to play, the fall has instead prompted the organization to make much-needed changes. Long gone is the era of Papa Steinbrenner, who was not afraid to make massive changes. His son, instead, stays timid. Appearing at Sportico’s Invest in Sports conference yesterday, Hal Steinbrenner gave an overview of what the supposed modifications will be.

As usual, he was fantastically vague and did not refer to anything concrete. The only thing Yankees fans are assured of right now is the analytics audit being done. Even the general manager is all for it, even though it includes more members of Steinbrenner’s family.

“According to The New York Post’s Joel Sherman, Steinbrenner also mentioned the involvement of his oldest nephew, Steve Swindal Jr., in having ‘a big part of a lot of the decisions we make.’ And Swindal is most associated with the analytic group as well.”

It’s certainly nothing like the days of the Boss because the same front office is coming back.

Aaron Boone, Brian Cashman Back in 2024?

Steinbrenner has proven time and again that he is loathe to shake things up, rather than preferring to maintain stability. He approves of Cashman and Boone wholeheartedly and it’s expected they will both return in 2024. In a season that has seen Bronx fans go as far as organizing ‘Fire Cashman Night’, the ownership is stubbornly refusing to believe they may be faulty.
