Most MLB teams have disappointed this season. Be it New York Mets or Oakland Athletics. With the League’s highest payroll, it has been a tough year for the former. Amidst the growing debate about who is responsible for this mess, most recently, the Mets’ billionaire owner Steve Cohen shouldered some of the blame while reflecting on the year thus far.

Poor form and injury issues have burdened the team with their unrecognisable play compared to last year. Hence, this candid comment by Cohen came when fans genuinely worry about the team’s prospects.

During a recent interview, Steve Cohen spoke about the Mets’ current form. He talked about players’ less strong appearance compared to last year. Furthermore, he shouldered some of the responsibility when asked who is to blame. Cohen said there is a lot of blame to go around, but as owner, he should also take responsibility. SNY shared a video of the statement by the billionaire on Twitter.

During the interview, Cohen said, “Well, you know, there’s plenty of blame to go around, right? I mean, I’ll take responsibility, I’m the owner. Yeah, listen, ultimately, for some reason we’re not as crisp as we were last year. We had a lot of players perform really well last year and this year not performing quite as well. What the reason is, I don’t know.” He further said, “It doesn’t mean it has to last all season.”

In a recent interview, Mets manager Buck Showalter defended Cohen as a team owner. But the billionaire is unhappy with how his franchise is performing. As the trade deadline approaches, Cohen will look for the front office to get things back in order. Most recently, they suffered another loss, making things worse.

Will Mets miss the postseason?

In a shocking turn of events, the supposed World Series-contending Mets might miss the postseason. With a 36-44 win-loss record, the team is sitting 4th in the NL East. They lost their most recent series against the Milwaukee Brewers and continue to sink in the standings. Despite having the highest MLB payroll by far, the Mets seem unable to put together consistent wins. Although half the season is left, the struggling team seems unlikely to make a postseason appearance. But only time will tell if they can make a miraculous comeback in the season.
