The New York Mets have made the news again. They have been in the contract negotiations with many players this offseason. While the Mets were able to sign some players, some others slipped out of their hands. But there is one player’s negotiation that has been going on for months and it might be finally coming to an end. And this is because of the New York Mets owner, Steve Cohen’s statements.

The New York team has been making some big moves, including signing Juan Soto for the biggest contract in MLB, offering $765 million. They’ve also added pitchers like Sean Manaea, Clay Holmes, and Griffin Canning. But the negotiations with Pete Alonso and his agent Scott Boras have been going on for months. Both parties have been at it for almost since May 2024 and have not reached a deal yet. But after the comments of Steve Cohen, it looks like there won’t be a deal.

During the AmazinDay event held by the Mets, Steve Cohen had this to say about the ongoing negotiations with Pete Alonso: “Personally this has been an exhausting conversation and negotiation. I mean, Soto was tough, this is worse. I will never say no, you know, there’s always the possibility.” Saying that this was one of the toughest negotiations he had ever done, and it was exhausting.

Cohen also added “But the reality is, you know, we’re moving forward and, you know, we continue to bring in players. As we continue to bring in players, the reality is, you know, it becomes harder to fit Pete into a, you know, what is a very expensive, you know, group of players that we already have. And that’s where we are. And I’m being brutally honest.” This just proves that the Mets and Pete Alonso agreement might never happen this time around and both of them will be parting ways. This is especially because of the addition of new players who are younger and more expensive. Adding this and the Pete Alonso contract might be a bit too much for the Mets. So the Mets have decided to move on and eventually, Pete Alonso will too.

And the insiders who were watching this said, “I feel like that little moment was just as much for Pete’s representation. Oh, absolutely. As it was for the fans. Absolutely. Look, we’re getting tired of this. Yeah. And we don’t like anything that you’ve presented, and that’s the quote. And it’s also for Pete because a lot of times the message does not get back to the player. Regardless of who the negotiation is, he’s not sitting in the room negotiating.”

It feels like when Steve Cohen got an opportunity to get on the mic and share his view; he did not hold back and was brutally honest. The insiders also felt that he said this to make his feelings clear to Pete Alonso and say that his time period for negotiations was closing. Making this a direct ultimatum for Pete Alonso.

We will just have to wait and see how these negotiations are going to end. It is yet to be known what the outcome is going to be. Pete Alonso might decide to stay with the Mets. He may go on to another franchise, though. Only time will tell which direction he is going to take.

The New York Mets have shaken up the National League East this offseason. They made savvy acquisitions and changes to their roster. The focal point of these moves is signing star outfielder Juan Soto to a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract. This gargantuan deal not only strengthens the Mets’ offense but also sets a new benchmark in Major League Baseball contracts.

Other than Soto, the New York Mets have brought on a couple of big players for their pitching. Clay Holmes is coming aboard after serving as the New York Yankees’ closer; he’s gotten a three-year deal worth $38 million, and he is set to be shifted to the rotation. He’s asserted himself that this is something that won’t significantly change his delivery, but rather make him start games.

The New York Mets’ drive into the offseason was surrounded by talk of their fiscal maneuvers. Owner Steve Cohen admitted that it’s tough for the New York Mets to compete with teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Yankees. These teams have giant amounts of money from which to draw. Yet, he is invested in making a championship team after signing signings such as Soto and Holmes with star-level paychecks.

These strategic acquisitions put the Mets in a prime position to be solid contenders in the National League East. High-profile signings help buttress their roster to challenge the division’s traditional powerhouses and set up themselves as a dominant force in the immediate future season. The outcome of the moves will closely be watched as the season progresses.
