“For the rest of his career,” Hal Steinbrenner’s words sealed what was known for a long time – the New York Yankees want to keep Juan Soto in the Bronx for life. From the moment the Dominican star stepped foot in the Pinstripes’ clubhouse, it was certain this was a special match. The two took to each other like fish takes to water and everything seemed natural. So now that Steinbrenner has made his intentions clear, what is in Soto’s mind?
The Yankees superstar’s on-field performances have been nothing short of extraordinary. Such has been his domination that Soto currently tops multiple AL MVP projections. However, off the field, there’s just been silence. The Childish Bambino knows questions of extension will always surround him and has learned to deflect them. However, this time he had to answer and he gave an encouraging answer to the Yankees owner.
“My doors has been always open,” Juan Soto said in his postgame interview. “Whenever he wants to start talking with Scott and all his people, the door is open. They was open to hear whatever he has. And for me, I just focus on the game right now.” So can we start expecting extension talks to begin soon?

That’s quite a complicated situation. Soto’s agent Scott Boras doesn’t like extensions. The superstar agent always encourages his clients to test the market during their free agency. This way he can negotiate a better deal for his clients. On top of that it’s Juan Soto – the entire league is after him. For Boras, this is a golden opportunity to go near the Shohei Ohtani number.
On top of that, even Hal Steinbrenner isn’t known for midseason deals. The owner said as much during his interview. However, this is a unique situation and that could lead to extraordinary measures.

While speaking to YES Network’s podcast, Hal Steinbrenner noted that neither he nor Boras do midseason deals. “I think it can be a distraction. But as I said in Spring Training when I met with (the media), this is a unique situation and a very unique player. So I wouldn’t be shocked if there was a conversation or two had possibly during the course of the season,” Steinbrenner said.
However, it won’t be easy for the Yankees. As Steinbrenner said, Soto needs more time. Despite being a natural, Soto’s been here for only a few months. Juan Soto too has shared that he typically needs an entire season to understand everything about an organization. So at least for now, the talks look far. But with both sides open to it, perhaps in the future, we will witness something developing in this story.
