Having been one of the most renowned faces in the sport, Derek Jeter did not want to limit his legacy to ballpark only. And for the same reason, after he retired from the game, the Yankees legend followed his other dream to operate a baseball team by joining the Miami Marlins’ ownership in 2017.

Notably, fans are undoubtedly one of the biggest reasons any team thrives. In every sport, there are a number of fans who dedicate their whole life to their favorite team. And the Marlins also has a special fan who goes by the name of “The Marlins’ Man.” However, the Marlins Man, who has been a season ticket holder since 1993, was angry with the changes captain clutch made in the team. Therefore, during a town hall meeting in December 2017, he, without any fear, voiced his displeasure with Jeter’s changes. While doing so, he also pitched the new CEO some ideas to generate PR for the team but was instantly struck out by the captain himself.

Transitioning through a complete takeover is a challenging task for everyone. Hence, Marlins fans had concerns about Jeter taking over. They thought that in spite of helping the team grow, he would drown the team even more. To help the fans understand that change always isn’t a bad thing. To his dismay, things did not go how he wanted. And instead of active participation, Marlins Man made the meeting mostly about him threatening to change allegiance to other MLB teams. But Jeter was not having it. Therefore, he easily struck down any silly ideas by the Marlins Man for the team’s promotion.

After this pitch, Marlins Man continued to speak straight for four minutes, and when he was done, Mr. November confusingly looked at him and said, “I’ll let you throw out the first pitch with a 10-year plan,” and garnered a lot of cheers and laughs. However, this shows that messing with the captain is never a good idea.

Jeter was close to missing out on the Marlins’ deal

With the investor Bruce Sherman and others, Derek Jeter was trying his best to buy the Marlins in 2017. But since he was short of the required $1.2 billion, he was about to lose out on the sale. And if it wasn’t for the former slugger’s long-time best friend, NBA legend Michael Jordan, the deal might not have happened.
