Steroids or not, Barry Bonds was one of a kind. A monster from the plate, Bonds dominated the game for over two decades. However, it is also true that had the steroids chapter not come to his MLB career, the San Francisco Giants would have been an undisputed GOAT in MLB. Notably, back in the early 2000s, when the BALCO scandal came to light, Bonds was one of the top names who received the most criticism. And one of the many people to criticize the Giants legend was the then-President of the United States, George W. Bush.

The steroids era has deeply affected Major League Baseball. It took away the interest in the game that is yet to return. While talking about the same, it would be tough to leave out the disputed home run king, Barry Bonds, with 762 career home runs. When the time came for the ex-POTUS to address the nation about the scandal, he did it methodically, without ever mentioning the Giants’ legend’s name.

On January 2004, the former president’s State of the Union address had one sole topic- steroids. While addressing the nation, ex-POTUS said, “Unfortunately, some in professional sports are not setting much of an example. The use of performance-enhancing drugs like steroids in baseball, football, and other sports is dangerous, and it sends the wrong message— that there are shortcuts to accomplishment and that performance is more important than character.”

The then-president might not have used the name of the Giants’ star. But from the words of his speech, one can easily say that they were, in fact, about the sole achiever of 500 home runs and 500 stolen bases.

What was the BALCO Scandal?

The scandal involved a company named BALCO. Authorities accused it of providing performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) to various athletes. However, the accusation was for not one sport but those in baseball, track and field, and other sports.

The company BALCO was allegedly involved in distributing banned substances. They were steroids and human growth hormone (HGH) for athletes looking to enhance their performance. The scandal exposed the widespread use of these substances among athletes, tarnishing the reputation of several prominent sports figures.
