There is no documentary quite like an athlete’s if done correctly. Their story of greatness and how they went from kids to recognized names is fun to watch. Except, of course, it’s not fiction. Michael Jordan did it, Tom Brady did it, Derek Jeter did it, and now it may be Alex Rodriguez‘s turn. The New York Yankees slugger has a highly complicated past that deserves a telling from his perspective. Even baseball’s villain has a few words to say.

A few months ago, A-Rod announced that he was working on a new book to tell his life story. Fans brutally trolled him by invoking his former fiancee, Jennifer Lopez, and his drug-tainted past. The retired slugger may be telling his story on another platform if news of his media house is to be believed.

Rodriguez’s media house, Mason Media, just appointed a new COO, Dana Z. Currier, according to Variety. The Westbrook Media and CNN alum will now head an all-female team alongside CEO Nora Ali and Amanda McPhillips,  the company’s senior vice president of development. Ali founded the organization with Rodriguez and his business partner Marc Lore in 2021.

According to Variety, “The company concentrates on premium formats, docuseries, documentary features, and IP-driven scripted content for broadcast, streaming, and digital buyers. Mason Media aims to tell stories around business, innovation, sports, entertainment, and entrepreneurship, while elevating historically overlooked voices.”

A-Rod has been in talks for a series featuring a story of his life, much like frenemy Derek Jeter’s docuseries ‘The Captain.’ While Jeter’s feature focused on his journey from a kid from Kalamazoo to the captain of the Yankees, Rodriguez’s feature will be a bit different. With a focus on being more raw, it could be a groundbreaking piece of media if it happens.

Interestingly, The Captain’s treatment of friend-turned-enemy Alex Rodriguez was little more than that of an anti-hero.

For too long, Alex Rodriguez has been portrayed as the villain of the story. The hotheaded young star who would do anything to win the game, and certainly, there’s some truth to it. The media treated him like an explosive piece of news but ever since his return from a year-long suspension in 2014, humility has been his go-to expression.

“I was goofy as hell. He was perfect as hell. I’m an easy guy to cheer against. He’s an easy guy to cheer for,” the retired Yankee says in The Captain.

If Rodriguez goes the way of former famous athletes, it will be a chance for him to tell his own story, from his own lens. Not quite a media circus but maybe an honest retelling of the tale.
