With 62 home runs and a broken Roger Maris record from 1961 against the free market, Aaron Judge was the undoubted American League MVP in 2022. As a result, he left the New York Yankees’ front office with no other choice than to meet his price and bring him back to the outfield. However, Judge’s slugging wasn’t the only reason behind the Pinstripes shedding $360 million, for the 6-foot 7-inch giant.

After eight long years, for the first time since Derek Jeter’s retirement in 2014, the Pinstripes found a suitable candidate to fill the empty captaincy position in the roster.

Now, with the Yanks set to field their first team since their ALCS elimination in a week, Aaron Boone candidly opened up about Judge’s new role in the team.

Long before the official announcement, the Pinstripes had a skipper in their outfield

However, long before Judge was appointed captain, his teammates already considered him their captain. In the same piece, pitcher Lou Trivino spoke about how Judge was always their captain. He said, “He was already the captain. No one was like, ‘Oh, Judge a captain? Never thought of that.’ In my mind, it was just a formality. He’s a very genuine guy; he cares more about just himself. He’s the guy you want on your team, not only because of his talent but his character.”
