Shohei Ohtani shines in baseball, but is Mamiko Tanaka the real MVP on the basketball court?

Shohei Ohtani has been breaking records and putting up extremely high numbers. Now that the Dodgers have won the World Series, the championship title is more special to Ohtani, as it is his first. But did you know his wife Mamiko Tanaka is a player too? No, not in baseball, but Mamiko played pro basketball in Japan. Recently, the couple was seen playing basketball together in a video on Instagram.

You would think such a talented baseball player would possibly be good in other sports, right? But it’s exactly the opposite – Shohei Ohtani failed to basket compared to his wife, who treated it like a piece of cake. In the video that is being circulated on X, Shohei Ohtani and Mamiko Tanaka are seen taking shots at the hoop. Mamiko shows everyone exactly why she is a pro at basketball.

The videos of Tanaka playing basketball aren’t new to social media, during the World Series, one particular video had emerged showing her playing in Japanese women’s basketball pro leagues. She was as smooth as Ohtani is in baseball.

Shohei Ohtani and Mamiko Tanaka announced their marriage back in February this year through Instagram. After that, the couple has been seen in most of Ohtani’s games along with their adorable fluffy companion, Decoy. They laughed and celebrated as he won the World Series. Now, the real concern for Ohtani is the injury he sustained while playing. At the annual GM meetings, Los Angeles Dodgers General Manager Brandon Gomes gave an insightful update on Shohei Ohtani’s recovery.

The Dodgers are in ‘caution’ mode over Shohei Ohtani

Gomes and the team’s approach to Shohei Ohtani’s rehab process following his left shoulder injury has been made. Brandon Gomes made it clear that the Dodgers will remain patient as they closely monitor the 30-year-old’s progress. They know that his unique status as a two-way player presents its own set of challenges when it comes to recovery, so, they’d have to be cautious.

Have an interesting take?

The major point Gomes emphasized was that Ohtani’s rehab as a pitcher could be more complicated than just recovering from a standard injury. This is because of the demands placed on his arm in his role as both a starter and a dynamic hitter. The team’s medical and training staff will have to take a careful, measured approach to ensure that Shotime’s rehab does not hinder his ability to return to either role.

The Dodgers are reportedly taking a long-term view in terms of Ohtani’s recovery. Rather than rushing his return, they are committed to allowing him the time necessary to fully heal. This approach also matches with the idea that Ohtani’s future with the team will likely be as a two-way player, something the Dodgers are deeply invested in. The season is still months away, so there’s plenty of time, and this could set up a long and successful partnership with Shohei Ohtani in the years to come.
