Hold your horses and blue-clad baseball bats, Los Angeles! The highly awaited debut of Shohei Ohtani in a Dodgers uniform will have to wait a tad bit longer. As per manager Dave Roberts, it turns out that it’s not yet time for the world to see this generational talent back again. To be precise, he won’t be gracing the field for the team’s spring training opener this Thursday. The ever so eager fans are tapping their feet asking one question – When will he start?

This news sure has dampened the opening-day buzz. But this move was a necessary evil in order to prioritize Ohtani’s long-term health. Do not forget that he’s still recovering from a torn UCL. The last thing anyone wants is to rush him back and jeopardize his season. Particularly after all the hype surrounding his ‘Unicorn’ status and his gargantuan deal.

Shohei Ohtani Fans Will Have To Wait Longer to See Him Play

After Friday’s workout, Ohtani said he expects to take live batting practice next week,” Roberts revealed. “He won’t be in the lineup on Thursday, but shortly thereafter, I see him playing with us.” The caveat here is ‘shortly thereafter’. It is a subjective term that questions the whole possibility of seeing him hit soon.

But there sure is optimism in the air. Roberts himself acknowledged that Ohtani’s recovery is ahead of schedule. So is it possible that he will be seen debut-hinting sooner rather than later? It’s not easy to wait! We all know by now that the 29-year-old isn’t just any player.

ShotimeCactus League is a global phenomenon! A baseball unicorn with talent that goes beyond borders. His entry to Los Angeles has rightly generated a media frenzy like never before. The reason all eyes are on him and his entry as a hitter (solely) is that he is a difference-maker who could catapult the Dodgers to championship glory.

But amidst all the hype, the Dodgers recognize their responsibility. Though all endeavors are made with winning in mind, it’s about safeguarding the precious talent. Roberts understands that not winning a few spring training games is okay. But more importantly, rest is needed to maximize his potential for the entire season. Shielding their $700 million investment is paramount. The club will do it by all means possible, no matter the cautious approach or the fans’ frustration. After all, it is the smart thing to do.
