Home/MLB

The roar of the crowd echoes across the Tokyo Dome as MLB’s brightest stars, many from Japan, take center stage. What was once a sport dominated by American athletes is now being reshaped by International stars. And, of course, no one embodies this transformation more than Shohei Ohtani!

If we go back in time, last year’s World Series, headlined by Ohtani and other Japanese talents, recorded its highest ratings in seven years, marking a significant cultural shift in the world of baseball. But the story doesn’t end here. This week, five Japanese mega stars will headline the season opener between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs in Tokyo.

“It’s redefining itself as the world’s best league, not as American or North American baseball, and that’s going to help itself as it expands its market to Asia,” said Rob Fitts, consultant for the Yakyu exhibit. The Tokyo Series, featuring stars like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shota Imanaga, and the highly anticipated Roki Sasaki, marks a new chapter for baseball. A chapter where the sport thrives on a global stage. So what makes the Tokyo Series special?

Yamamoto, who is all set to take the mound in Game 1, was excited as he spoke about the honor of playing in front of his own people. “I really feel the excitement of the country with the games being played here,” he said, his smile lighting up the room. “I’m looking forward to pitching in front of the fans as well, and I want to make sure I do my very best.”

Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani, who is now entering his eighth season in the MLB, shared his thoughts. “I hope that my teammates get to enjoy Japan, but also that the fans get to see them enjoy it too,” he said, reflecting on the unique experience of playing in his home country. For Ohtani, the Tokyo Series wasn’t just a mere game, it was a career milestone.

For Roki Sasaki, just 23 and already a rising star, the moment was equally special.” I was literally in Japan until a few months ago,” he admitted. “So for me its more about just being able to pitch in this different uniform and with a different team making sure I perform at my best.” Sasaki, who will start Game 2 against the Cubs, is determined to make his mark in front of a nation that has already embraced him.
