The Los Angeles Dodgers two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani is a force to be reckoned with. And there is no doubt about that. He leads the league in batting average, dominates on the mound, and strikes fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers. However, even the seemingly unshakeable Ohtani can be taken by surprise. Thanks to his teammates’ hilarious demonstration during a recent game.

In a moment that had the entire dugout erupting in laughter, utility player Miguel Rojas decided to pull a prank on the superstar. As Ohtani readied himself to step up to the plate, Rojas nonchalantly informed him, “I’m pinch-hitting for you.” This was something that was quite new for Shotime this season.

The usually composed Ohtani was momentarily stunned as articulately captured in the video. It took him a few bewildered seconds to realize Rojas was simply messing with him. The Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, witnessing the entire scene unfold, couldn’t contain his laughter, letting out a hearty cackle that rung across the dugout. And the others in the dugout too joined in on the fun.

The two-way phenom’s surprised reaction was understandable. While Rojas is a valuable asset to the team, his defensive skills far outweigh his offensive prowess. Currently batting .261, Rojas pales in comparison to Ohtani’s league-leading .356 average and impressive 69 hits.

Thankfully, manager Dave Roberts seems firmly committed to keeping Ohtani in the batter’s box. This was evidenced by Ohtani going 2-for-4 in the same game, marking his 22nd multi-hit performance of the season. Now, while the Unicorn might be eager to step onto the mound at the earliest, the team manager is doing what’s best for Ohtani and the team at this point. Dave Roberts too was audience to this little prank that went on in the dugout.

This lighthearted prank perfectly captures the camaraderie within the Dodgers organization. Though this is Ohtani’s 1st season with the Dodgers, he seems to be fitting in well, and clearly, the team too is opening up, not sparing him from the usual team shenanigans. This instance showcases not only the respect teammates have for Ohtani’s talent but also their ability to find humor even amidst the pressure of a major league game.

While Ohtani reigns supreme on the field, it’s clear his teammates know how to keep him grounded – even if it means momentarily questioning his position at the plate (with a healthy dose of teasing, of course). Let’s just say, Dodgers fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing Ohtani will remain the offensive powerhouse they rely on.
