Is Shohei Ohtani the greatest two-way player in MLB history, or is it too soon to say?

Another day, another baseball record shattered by Shohei Ohtani! Tying himself with two legendary baseball players, on Wednesday’s 10-8 victory over the Cubs, Ohtani belted his 12th career leadoff homer and his sixth of the season. But here’s the real kicker—he’s set a new career high with 47 home runs this year and is now just 3 homers away from reaching the 50 mark! And it’s not about just the home runs, the 30-year-old is also lighting up the charts with his stolen bases!

Shotime stole his 48th base of this season. Amazingly, this was Shohei Ohtani’s 12th game where he hit a rocket and stole a base. Till now, only 3 men have done something equal or better in baseball; Ronald Acuna Jr and Bobby Bonds, with 12 each, and Rickey Henderson with 13. So, would it be surprising if by the end of this season the two-way phenom stands above Henderson? Not really, especially because Ohtani’s teammates already know just how good he actually is.

Dave Roberts put Ohtani’s performance in a simple sentence even before Wednesday’s game, “Shohei’s having an unprecedented season.” True to his manager’s words, Shohei Ohtani entered the field eyeing a record with 17 games left—aiming to be the first ever to smash 50 homers and swipe 50 bases in one season. And man, did he show up! Did you catch that first-inning homer? It blasted off his bat at a whopping 118.1 mph and flew a massive 405 feet like it had wings. And here’s something even more wild—it wasn’t even Ohtani’s fastest home run!

The Dodgers ace has already smashed two homers faster than this one, peaking at an incredible speed of 118.7 mph, with this latest homer now ranked as his third fastest. Roberts explained that hitting the ball at such speeds usually results in doubles for most players but quipped when it comes to Shotime, “It’s a home run. He plays tremendous baseball. You can see he’s picking us up big time.” We get it, the shotstop lifts the blue crew in a similar way like adding spice just right can lift any dish! Also, there is one thing to note: Ohtani isn’t just making waves with these feats; he’s also aiming high for another milestone.

He is currently eyeing to become the first full-time designated hitter crowned MVP Award winner. While David Ortiz has mixed feelings about it all, one of Ohtani’s teammates shared a sweet note.“Obviously, we want him to get there because that means he’s doing great, and that helps our team out,” said Max Muncy. The third baseman also added that, “Everything the 30-year old does is so impressive, it’s just fun to be a part of it.” And Max’s absolutely right—everyone has been a part of it, with Ohtani’s leadoff homer not just adding to his list of records but also bringing some serious luck to his team!

Shohei’s lead off home run was lucky for the blue crew!

Shohei Ohtani’s leadoff homer was like striking a match that lit up the whole game. It set off one of the Dodgers’ most explosive innings this season when they faced the Cubs. But it wasn’t just Ohtani showing off his skills; his teammates were in on the action too. As things heated up, Tommy Edman came to bat with two outs and nailed his third home run in just two games! The crack of his bat hitting that ball? Pure music for any baseball fan’s ears, and with a similar rhythm, came Max Muncy.

After all, it was his bobblehead night on Wednesday! The real signature came when the third baseman went leading off with back-to-back-to-back homers against Wicks. And their power streak didnt end here. Will Smith, who the Dodgers are likely wanting to return to form for October, also chimed in with some real excitement on the pitch! So how was Dave feeling? He LOVED it, expressing, “It’s been a while since I’ve felt the energy. Fans were just going crazy; it was a lot of fun. A lot of energy in the dugout.” And we totally get it—this game was nothing short of spectacular; looking at their previous plays as well, it seems like the blue crew is on a powerful streak!

The Dodgers saw back-to-back-to-back homers in an inning for the second time over their last two weeks. Moreover, this is also just the 7th time in franchise history that they’ve cranked four homers in an inning! So far, the hunger for records is not only limited to Ohtani, and the team is likely having record breaking moments too. With the playoffs approaching, things are really starting to heat up now.

The blue crew is at the top of the charts and Ohtani is on track for a historic 50-50 mark, so, what new records do you think can they make or break? Let us know in the comments!
