This part of the season is all about optimism, unless you watch your favorite pitcher leave mid-game. Spring Training: a brand-new season and new opportunities for players wanting to make an impact. But unfortunately, it happened yet again! At this point, we can almost hear Rays fans collectively holding their breath. Tampa Bay Rays’ ace, who was recently named the opening day starter for the team, departed early from a spring training game against the Red Sox, showing signs of a serious arm injury. To be honest, the Rays weren’t prepared for this.
That $7.2M pitcher is none other than Shane McClanahan. The news immediately gained traction, raising concerns, noting how McClanahan’s arm looked like it had significantly lost all the power. If you have been following his journey at all, you would know why this is a nightmare situation for him. He has already undergone Tommy John surgery in 2023 and this time, he was expected to make a big comeback. But the early reports hint that if this shoulder strain is serious, the Rays could end up being in big trouble.
For now, let’s hope it’s not another long road to recovery for McClanahan. Witnessing a pitcher suffering like that, particularly during spring training, is never a good sign.

If it turns out to be severely bad, the Rays’ rotation will hit a major setback even before the season begins. After all, with everything McClanahan has been through, the last thing he and the Rays need is another season disrupted by injury.

Jiménez decides to stay with Durham, prioritizing chemistry with the Rays
Baseball is commonly known to be a sport all about statistics. But sometimes, that’s not the case. Eloy Jiménez found himself in a situation where he had to make a pivotal decision. The Tampa Bay Rays informed him he would be commencing the season in Triple-A Durham. He was given a choice to either stay put or look for a major league opportunity somewhere else. Instead of choosing the latter category with another team, Jiménez decided to stay.
The reason? Pretty simple actually—he feels at home here. He beautifully stated, “We like it here; we feel really good here, so we just want to give it a try and see what happens.” Very recently, this sentiment was reflected well when a steady stream of Rays’ team members came by his locker, shook his hand, and offered sincere words of encouragement.
What’s your perspective on:
Can the Rays survive another McClanahan injury, or is their season already in jeopardy?
Have an interesting take?
His spring might have started slow, but he knows to rise for the occasion when it matters the most. Looking back at his past 9 games, he hit .310 (9-for-29) with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. He has remarkably displayed glimpses of prowess that once made him an emerging talent. Losing the final utility spot to Curtis Mead didn’t dull his confidence at all.
