However, Jeter wasn’t the only warrior in his family. In November 2000, shortly after the Yankees won the World Championship, Derek Jeter’s younger sister, Sharlee Jeter, received some life-threatening and wavering news. Balanced against that, in an interview featured on the MLive YouTube channel in 2018, Sharlee discussed her battle against cancer and the perpetual comparisons drawn with Derek Jeter.
She said, “Cancer became something for me that I had. I had said, wait a minute, nobody can compare me and Derek in this one. He hasn’t had it. He wouldn’t have handled it the same way. It’s something that I went through and it was like my personal badge of honor.”
Sharlee then moved to talk about how she did not take any help through Jeter’s wealth, popularity, or fandom. She said, “You can’t say that he got me through it. His money couldn’t get me through it. His fame couldn’t get me through it. You know, I had to get through it. And I had to fight this on my own.”
Finally, she concluded by saying, “And that was something that I think started that whole mentality of, there are a lot of things that I’m gonna be faced with that not only am I going to have to go through on my own but also I’m probably gonna do it better than he would. And once you get that through your mind, you know, things start to change.”
