Derek Jeter and Mariah Carey, the couple, fans couldn’t stop talking about. Some were fans of baseball, some were fans of her music, but almost everyone wanted to know more about them together. Their relationship may have been short-lived, but it was one of those pop culture moments that fans still remember today. Both Jeter and Carey were at the zenith of their careers. One push, and they would tip into superstardom on the other side. Many thought they’d do it together.

In fact, Jeter had a plan to ‘steal’ Carey away like a Prince Charming comes to save his Princess from the clutches of her ‘evil’ husband. But things didn’t quite go according to plan.

Derek Jeter was going to ‘save’ Mariah Carey

At a young age, Carey fell in love and married music executive Tommy Mottola. He was many years her senior, but the singer didn’t care. Many years later, however, she revealed that it was an abusive relationship she wished she’d never gotten into. Right when she was feeling vulnerable, in swooped the Yankees’ rising superstar Derek Jeter. Carey later described how Jeter was a safe harbor. He was the catalyst that inspired her to outgrow Mottola.

When the individuals became a couple, people began to recognize Carey’s name, and Jeter did too. In her book, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she writes about a particular conversation that took place between the former couple. “‘I had this plan,’ he told me. ‘I was going to come to New York. I was going to get on the Yankees. I was going to meet you, and I was going to steal you away from Tony Sony’—his name for Tommy—’and then we were going to get married,'” writes the Songbird Supreme on page 186.

Except, things turned out a little differently. “My grin was a mile wide. ‘Okay. I like that plan.’ Only, he didn’t steal me from Tommy—I liberated myself.” There was a time when the latter couple were rumored about their relation.

Sometimes, when fans watch the life of someone from afar, they become personally invested in them. Rumors tend to fly about celebrities in particular, and the Carey-Jeter couple was not an exception from it either. Although they only dated for a few months, many speculated that the singer and the former Yankee were ready to take that big step.

While it’s always heartwarming to see two individuals who love each other tie the knot, marriage just wasn’t in the cards for these two.
