Looks like Pete Alonso is not going away from the headlines any time soon. He is still without a team as the negotiations with the New York Mets are still up in the air. Many of them think that he is coming back to the Mets while others think it is a lost cause. But all this could have been avoided if not for one man, Scott Boras.

It was reported that the Mets’ cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees were looking at Pete Alonso once upon a time. But with Scott Boras trying to pull his usual stunts to acquire more money, the negotiations failed before they began. Boras, who has other high-profile clients like Bryce Harper, Javier Baez, and Max Scherzer, is the usually one of the most aggressive agents during negotiations. But this time, his plan seems to have backfired.

After Scott Boras inflated the market value of Pete Alonso to $150 million, the New York Yankees did not even want to consider negotiating. Instead, they went to players like Josh Naylor and Paul Goldschmidt. To be noted, Naylor may be 27-years-old but even Goldschmidt at 37 was more attractive to the Yankees than Alonso. There have been many rumors that Scott Boras has also done this with some of his other clients as well.

This made other teams not even consider Pete Alonso as a candidate and has now made the negotiations with the Mets very frustrating. Steve Cohen, the Mets owner came right out to declare these negotiations were more tiring than what happened with Juan Soto. There was even reports that said that Pete Alonso is very close to agreeing to a contract with the Mets. The numbers on his paycheck were unclear but it was supposedly for three years.

Whatever happens, one thing’s for sure – Scott Boras messed up big time this time. He might love to pull of big moves like he did with Soto, so there will definitely be a twist with Alonso. But the client/ agent duo will have to tread carefully this time, because the Yankees are not interested and several other teams have said the same. And at this point, even the Mets might not take the slugger back.

Mets 2.0: Are they shifting gears in their team-building approach?

The New York Mets are changing their approach to team building under President David Stearns. This includes a potential trade for ace Dylan Cease, in order to strengthen their pitching staff. The signing of Juan Soto was one of the biggest moves in MLB history as he came for a $765 million, 15-year deal to the Mets.

Besides high-profile signings, the Mets are also concentrating on player development. They have a good coaching staff that is headed up by Jeremy Hefner and that has been instrumental in changing the way pitchers like Sean Manaea and Luis Severino perform and, in fact, making the team an attractive destination for free agent pitchers. The lucrative deals under deep-pocketed owner Steve Cohen don’t hurt either.

All these calculated moves are proving one thing – the Mets are turning their team into a team that can become great by balancing big players and developing players. Now if only their veteran slugger in Pete Alonso comes back.
