According to the analysts, the third baseman is looking for somewhere near $200 million. But is anyone going to offer $200 million? Looks like not, because then the teams, especially the Tigers, would have put a deal like that on the table for him. Boras has been known to get his clients the big payday, but sometimes the waiting approach doesn’t always work out. Just look at Jordan Montgomery from last year as an example.

The projected amount for the Southpaw was initially around $105 million, but Scott Boras was adamant about more. Boras asked the teams for approximately $170 million—that’s more than 50 million, and of course, teams were unwilling to spend that much on Montgomery. The result? The pitcher had to wait till February and ultimately signed a deal that was way less than he had expected.

The D-backs got the Southpaw for only one year and $25 million—this deal reflected poorly on Scott Boras, and Montgomery fired him as his agent. So, is the Alex Bregman situation also going to turn out like that now? We don’t know, but January is here, and there is only so much time left.

Alex Bregman could be the perfect addition to the Detroit Tigers’ roster as they look to continue building momentum after a strong 2024 season. With the Tigers showing they’re ready to compete, adding a star like Bregman could help the squad break through in the AL Central. Bergman, who’s been vital in the Houston Astros’ lineup for years, turned in another solid season in 2024. The third baseman appeared in 145 games and posted a respectable .260/.315/.453 slash line.

He smacked 26 homers and drove in 75 RBIs, helping lead Houston to the postseason yet again. But there’s one major hurdle: the price tag. Signing the 30-year-old could cost Detroit a pretty penny. In an episode of the Fair Territory podcast, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal made a note of the Tigers’ spending habits under GM Scott Harris. “Scott Harris, since he has taken over as GM, I believe his biggest contract for a free agent is $24 million, something like that. It is low. And the signings they have had so far, both one-year, $15 million,” Rosenthal said.

If the Tigers are serious about bringing in Bregman, they might need to stretch the budget or at least convince ownership that it’s time to open up the wallet.
