Statistics on the field, contracts off the field, even throwing age into the mix – everything points to baseball as a game of numbers. Sluggers in the batter’s box or pitchers on the mound know how to shine under the spotlight, but it’s agents who get them there. For the last several decades, several MLB players have graced history books for record-breaking deals. And they all have one man to thank for their fortunes – Scott Boras.
Whatever one says about the man, be it his money-minded nature or inability to stay true to his word, he usually does best by his clients. A Forbes report from 2022 tried to delve into the eye-popping deals Boras had brought to life last year and the total value almost arrived at $4 billion, $3.8 if you want to nitpick. Jaw-dropping? I think so. But can 2023 somehow surpass those numbers?

The Texas Rangers’ Corey Seager, AKA 2023 World Series MVP, more than worked for his massive 10-year, $325 million contract these last two years. Scott Boras knew who he was signing in not just Seager, but also names like Max Scherzer, Bryce Harper, and Gerrit Cole. Per the 2022 Forbes article, Boras commanded “$3.83 billion in active playing contracts under management, yielding up to $191 million in commissions based on the maximum 5% fee that MLB agents are allowed to charge.”
Be it Xander Bogaerts’ 11 years/ $280 million, Brandon Nimmo’s 8 years/ $162 million, or even Carlos Rodon’s 6 years/ $162 million, their agent left no stone unturned. The current offseason seems ready to leave those numbers in the dust. Remember the Carlos Correa saga all last offseason and early 2023? He ended up with 6 years and $200 million with the Minnesota Twins after facing rejections from New York and San Francisco.

Fresh off a comeback season with the Cubs, insiders predict around $200 million, if not more. Bellinger may go back to Chicago or find a new team. But whichever way he chooses, it’s bound to make his bank account happy.
