It looks like the Mets are in the driver’s seat for a potential reunion with Pete Alonso. Scott Boras, Alonso’s agent, has taken a different route this time. Boras has put a tantalizing offer on the table—a three-year deal with opt-outs, and it’s exclusive to New York for now. It’s a win-win scenario if you’re in the Mets’ front office, or if you’re Alonso, who’s been consistently one of the top power hitters in the league.

This might be the best of both worlds for Mets supporters. They get to keep their cherished “Polar Bear” for a few more seasons. However, because opt-outs are flexible, Alonso and the Mets can reevaluate the scenario if it changes, whether it’s a championship run or a shift in the team’s direction. It’s interesting to remember that Alonso’s camp made this offer; the Mets did not.

Will Sammon of The Athletic discussed the whole Pete Alonso situation with A. J. Pierzynski on Foul Territory. Pierzynski asked Sammon if this is the first time he has heard an agent reaching out to a team. Pierzynski added that you don’t usually hear a player going to a team saying, “Hey, I’ll take 3 years. I know I was looking for 5 or 6 years or what Prince Fielder gets. but guess what Mets I’ll take 3 years to come  back… It’s a weird situation. I have never heard of that before.” Pierzynski further added that it is a weird situation, and personally he has never heard of it.

Come to think of it, it is actually because with Scott Boras as an agent, offers usually come rolling in. Boras does not have to go to teams with offers. Sammon responded to this and said, “It was new to me.” He further added that this is a different type of situation with Pete Alonso and the Mets. “He’s a homegrown fan favorite guy. Fans really appreciate  him.” Sammon emphasized the fact that the relationship he has with the Mets is something that really matters to Pete Alonso. “If he wants to continue to be a Met, this may be the best avenue for him,” said Sammon. Not only Pete, but his former teammates also want him to the club.

Manaea even joked about Alonso’s dedication to the gym. “He gets there before me,” Manaea laughed. It’s clear that their friendship goes beyond the baseball field, with Manaea admiring Alonso’s commitment to his craft. The two are pushing each other to get ready for whatever the next season brings, and Manaea couldn’t help but express his hope that Alonso remains in Queens for another run with the Mets.

But as any good teammate knows, baseball is a business, and Manaea understands that. “Whatever happens, I’ll be happy for him,” Manaea said, showing the kind of selfless attitude that only comes from true friendship. Whether Pete Alonso stays with  the Mets or moves on, Manaea’s support for his friend is unwavering.
