The clash between Scott Boras, Pete Alonso, and the New York Mets has reached a boiling point. Breaking one’s worst nightmare, Steve Cohen went public with his frustration, making it clear that he was unhappy with the negotiation talks with Boras. And though he mentioned, that he shouldn’t say never because anything is possible, the reality is that they might have to move on from Polar Bear. Still, Boras is far from shying away from claiming the Mets for being unreasonable.

The heart of this standoff is Alonso’s value who turned down a seven-year, $158 million extension last year, thinking he should be MLB’s top-paid hitter. But his age and declining performance are making the Mets dubious. Now this high-profile showdown caught the attention of former Marlins president David Samson who thinks Steve Cohen did the absolute right thing calling out Boras. He didn’t hold back on even criticizing Boras, saying he overestimates his hand and promises clients unrealistic deals.

David Samson was all fired up and didn’t hold back on his criticism of what everyone calls super agent Scott Boras. In the latest episode of The David Samson Show, he reflected on the stalemate negotiations, putting all the blame on Scott. For him, the agent simply didn’t do the homework and evaluate the player’s market properly. But no matter what, sources say Boras wants a contract where the Mets pay Alonso more money if he opts out!

According to Samson, “Scott Boras doesn’t want to do the work to take his players to arbitration or negotiate realistic deals. He overpromises to poach players from other agents, assuring them they’ll get contracts no one else can deliver. It’s all horse hockey.” It’s not difficult to interpret why he thinks so! The market isn’t that great for Pete Alonso. And given that he didn’t have a great season, Boras might not have evaluated his market properly.

Have an interesting take?

Samson, former Marlins president (2002 to 2017), feels that Boras focuses on inflating players’ value. Instead, he should find them teams that could be a proper fit. He claimed that an outstanding agent isn’t the one who can handle massive contracts like Juan Soto, because those deals take less effort. An excellent agent should be able to take care of other key players just as smoothly. Clearly, he isn’t all for the Boras being the star agent, but rather an agent who makes flash promises but gives no results.

Did Pete Alonso get played?

Right from the beginning of the entire Pete Alonso fiasco, many warned the player to be careful of Scott Boras. Several insiders mentioned that players often get swayed by the aura of Boras. In that context only David Samson feels Alonso is still unsigned where his return to the New York Mets might be impossible now. Alonso got sucked up into the vortex of this agent and has a completely misguided sense of his value,” said Samson. Well, not just Alonso, Samson also pointed out another player facing the same fate—Alex Bregman.

Both star players are unsigned and have the same agent. Don’t they remind everyone of the Boras Five? Samson surely went down that memory lane. Boras’s five are referred to as five of his clients/players from last season. They waited too long for the best deals. And some, like Jordon Montgomery, literally faced the brunt of missing out on spring training. Even Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, and Blake Snell couldn’t get long-term deals. “Boras overplays his hand with his free agents on a consistent basis. We saw what happened to those four players. He’s doing the same thing with Bregman and Alonso,” shared a worried Samson.

Seems like Pete Alonso isn’t aware of all these! He was warned by many insiders early on in the off-season and now it might be a little too late. Yet, the New York Mets fans want nothing more than their star player to be back. Do you think that might influence either the team or Pete’s agent?
