$240 million! That’s Scott Boras’ number for his client Blake Snell. It might sound high but Snell is a two-time Cy Young winner and some of his numbers are right up there with all-time greats. Also, this huge number could mean something more. It could be a signal of some special plan inside Boras’ head.
Ever since the New York Yankees’ $150 million contract got rejected by Snell, it became clear that he had a big number in his mind. Simultaneously the 31-year-old has seen quite a few teams exit his sweepstakes in the last few days. Though, one could wonder what this means for Snell, a top insider has shared how things could still shape up well for the ace.

Famous insider Ken Rosenthal was recently a guest on the Foul Territory show. While talking about the remaining free agents, he mentioned the sweepstakes of Blake Snell. Since the beginning, Rosenthal was clear on one fact: Snell is “too good” to not get paid.
“Is Boras overpricing him? Of course, he is overpricing him! That’s why he’s not signed right now. There’s going to be at some point, a happy medium…Blake Snell I don’t expect to sign a pillow contract, put it that way, he’s too good… He’s not some bum out there, people are discounting Blake Snell a little bit too much for me!” Rosenthal said.
Perhaps that’s exactly what Boras is counting on as well – the overall quality of Snell. Even though the ace hasn’t pitched a full game in his career and has a slightly below-average number of innings, Snell’s positive qualities still vastly outnumber his negatives. He’s won a Cy Young award in both AL and NL and is one of the most consistent strikeout pitchers in the league.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today had shared that Boras and Snell were expecting a $240 million contract. Could this be a strategy as well? It’s a time-tested strategy of starting high to increase the bottom line. Is Boras doing the same? Perhaps, he is as there are teams that are waiting to enter the race if the price reduces.
A new entry in the Snellzilla’s sweepstakes
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that the Toronto Blue Jays are interested in Snell as well. Currently, the team is monitoring the situation as they deem the asking price to be more than what they desire to pay. If they see the price lowering, they could look to enter the race.
