What started as a rather strong outing for Edwin Diaz, ended up turning into a moment of serious concern for the New York Mets.
So, manager Carlos Mendoza sent Diaz back for the 10th inning on Wednesday afternoon. Because he had such a flawless ninth inning, which included a strikeout. Sadly, things didn’t pan out as they were supposed to.
Bruce Harper started the inning at second as the designated runner, and the Philadelphia Phillies didn’t waste time at all. Harper swiped the third base, and Nick Castellanos came through with an RBI single to give a 3-2 lead to the Phillies. But then came the moment that had the Mets fans holding their breath.

Edwin Diaz is exiting today’s game with an apparent injury.
Diaz seemingly pointed to his left hip, directly after disengaging three different times, which led to a balk.
Hoping it’s nothing serious 🙏

Diaz threw just one pitch to J.T. Realmuto before suddenly motioning toward the dugout. The New York Mets training staff suddenly all came out. And the crowd watched as their $102 million closer was leaving the field in between the innings and under supervision. He threw 18 pitches during the appearance just two days after tossing 11 pitches to notch a dramatic save before Max Kranick took over with one out in the 10th.
So far there is no official word on why Diaz had to exit, but sources mentioned that he pointed at his left hip directly after disengaging three different times and even Mendoza did mention. For sure now there must be chaos in the dugout because this is not the time they want their star pitcher to end up on the injured list. Not when they are red-hot!

The New York Mets are simply unstoppable
The New York Mets have been completely lights out so far. The vibes at Citi Field are just immaculate because they just won another thrilling game against the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3. All thanks to the walk-off single by Starling Marte in the bottom of the 10th. With two outs, Marte just came through when he was needed most, and just like that, the Mets moved to 18-7 early on this season. The Phillies, meanwhile, dipped to 13-12.

Plus, here is a little history—according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com, the New York Mets 12-1 home record is now the best 13-game start at Citi Field in the franchise’s history! Not bad, right? They, after all, were expected to do this and nothing less after they handed that huge contract to Juan Soto. However, you have to give it to the Mets, they do look like a team that wants to return to the World Series, a place they haven’t returned since 2015. But now, even without key starters like Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea, they look every bit the WS contenders. And maybe the few among the squad who can go after the Dodgers.
Mostly everyone had more or less a good day, with Lindor going 2 for 4. Soto added a hit of his own, and Pete Alonso chipped in an RBI. Lindor is in form from the get-go itself, which is a rare sight from the last few seasons. All thanks to the coach making the right decision to interfere and speak up. Now both the teams will get a breather on Thursday before they hit the road again. The Philadelphia Phillies head on to Wrigley to take on the Cubs. Meanwhile, the Mets will travel to DC to face the Nationals.
