Despite a mediocre 79-win season, one could argue that the San Francisco Giants had one of the best pitching staffs last season. Luckily for them, they’re carrying forward much of it, but not everything is rosy here. Despite having a collection of scary pitchers, the Bay Bombers have found themselves bitten by the injury bug. With their injury list particularly filled by pitchers, there’s an argument to be made that Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery might be an obvious addition.
It’s not even about quality here, the Giants need an able hand to cover for their pitching shortage. With their biggest of stars returning halfway through the season, the Bay Bombers cannot risk another washout like they witnessed last season. With the Spring Training around the corner, could the Giants pull a massive coup right now?

Yes, thinking about a lineup filled with Logan Webb, Blake Snell, and Alex Cobb feels like a dream. But at least for the first half of the season, the ace will have to cover for Cobb. If his injury wasn’t enough, the Bay Bombers have another pitcher sitting on the sidelines. Perhaps that’s why The Athletic reported, “It would change the equation if the Giants spring for a remaining free agent like Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery.”
With Cobb and Robbie Ray both set to miss a huge chunk of the 2024 season, the pressure has shifted massively on the young guns. Kyle Harrison, Keaton Winn, and Tristan Beck made their debuts last season and are still quite raw. Pushing them right in front of the battlefield could be a risky move. Especially as the Giants see them as a huge part of the team’s future.
So in a way, this makes one return to the original point – could Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery change this equation? Absolutely. Both of them are coming off of great seasons. While Snell won the Cy Young award, Monty’s World Series heroics stole the show. More importantly, they are experienced and can provide a great guiding hand to the Giants’ young prospects.

While Montgomery has quite a few suitors, Snell looks more and more gettable for the Bay Area Giants.
Blake Snell – An obvious signing for the Bay Bombers
Snell’s free agency has been through some ups and downs. But during that entire journey, one team has remained a constant participant – the Giants. They know that in Snell they’ll not only get a great pitcher but also something they’ve always wanted – a big star! While the price of Snell might look a little out of their pocket, that’s the story with pretty much every team.

So with that in mind, the Giants have just as good a chance as anyone else. In fact, with their great pitching line-up and a possible upward trend, they have a great project to sell to the Snellzilla.
