Did the Giants make the right call locking in Matt Chapman with that massive extension?

Looks like things are finally turning around for Scott Boras’s clients as Matt Chapman just snagged an impressive 6-year contract. Last season was a bit of a snooze fest for the Boras Four—they were all expected to land big deals but ended up with much shorter contracts. Chapman, for one, had to settle for a short-term gig with the Giants. But now? It’s like the universe is finally cutting him some slack.

There was a possibility that Matt would opt out of his contract after this season and become a free agent again, to look for a long-term deal. The San Francisco Giants made sure he wasn’t going anywhere by providing him one! They secured his future with a massive six-year, $151 million contract extension on Wednesday night, and guess what? The deal also includes an additional clause.

According to a source who spoke with USA TODAY Sports but is keeping his identity anonymous until the Giants make it official, Matt Chapman’s new deal has a no-trade clause and no opt-outs. So, it looks like he’s in for the long haul! The deal is all set to start in 2025 and will run through 2030, adding a whopping $151 million on top of the $20 million he’s already raking in this season. And honestly, looking at Matt’s performance we’re not surprised by this deal at all!

The 31-year-old has been the Giants’ standout player this season, leading the team with 22 homers, 69 RBIs, 90 runs, 33 doubles, and 126 hits. Plus, the four-time Gold Glove winner, he’s been a defensive dynamo. He’s only the second third baseman in franchise history to notch at least 30 doubles, 20 homers, and 10 stolen bases in a single season, which was last achieved by Freddie Lindstrom, way back in 1930. So, seems like his stats made his extension a no-brainer for the team. But did you know that Matt Chapman isn’t the only Scott Boras client on the Giants’ radar? Yup, another Boras client—Blake Snell— was linked with the G-men too!

Is Blake Snell also up for an extension?

Blake Snell is already part of the Giants’ lineup, but there are chances that he will opt out after this season to test free agency again. Now, speculations are arising that even when this happens, the Giants will try to re-sign Snell to a bigger deal, just like they did with Matt Chapman. And if we look at the links, the possibility of offering him an extension is quite good. While they didn’t lock him down, the team will need a new ace to fill his shoes; and according to Bleacher Report, the G-men might already have a prime candidate to do so – Corbin Burnes.

Burnes, the Baltimore Orioles’ ace who’s hitting free agency soon, has had a standout season. The 29-year-old was in 28 games with a 13-7 record and a 3.19 ERA. So, if Snell decides to walk or doesn’t agree to a new deal, Burnes could be the Giants’ next big move. Either way, both Snell and Burnes are set to attract a lot of attention on the market once they hit free agency! So, now, San Francisco will need to make some quick decisions as the MLB offseason is very near. One last fun twist, did you know Corbin Burnes is also a Scott Boras client?

It looks like the Giants might be becoming a good luck charm for Boras clients, especially after securing Matt Chapman’s big deal. Whether they sign Burnes or Snell, it might just ease some of the heat Boras faced from his former client Jordan Montgomery. So, what do you think the Giants’ rotation will look like next season?
