Let’s face it—the San Francisco Giants can’t stay stuck in a free-agent drought forever. At some point, Buster Posey will break the cycle. He didn’t miss signing the big names like Farhan Zaidi! But unfortunately, that time hasn’t come yet. Instead of jumping for stars like Juan Soto, Blake Snell, and Corbin Burnes, Posey took a step back. Why? Well, they are too expensive, and getting in the sweepstakes would be a huge investment.
Fans are disappointed. Sure, it’s Posey’s first off-season as team president, but the story seems the same. The question is when will the Giants make splashes of getting the superstars? For once Posey, by signing Willy Adames, it felt like he was ready, but soon that kind of fell silent. And the lack of excitement and flash has only been magnified recently by their promotional campaigns.
Giants’ missing the mark with stars in team

The Giants announced a series of promotional giveaways. This included bobbleheads of Barry Bonds, Steph Curry, and Jung Hoo Lee hooded jerseys. Now they are all San Francisco favorites, and Bonds is a Bay Area legend, but his career is marred with a PED fiasco. Curry, on the other hand, is a basketball player. So, why is his bobblehead a part of this promotion? This just points out that the Giants may not have the star power that fans crave. Hence, compensation! Even Susan Slusser posed a question about this on Twitter.

Right now the off-season is winding down, and the Giants’ is still shaky. Surprisingly, it seems they are content with the lineup right now and have mentioned that they are done making any more big moves. They have Adames; they signed Tyler Fitzgerald, Chapman, and a rotation led by Webb, Verlander, and Robbie Ray. Well, they have a good enough rotation! But that won’t cut it, would it? The LA Dodgers, in comparison, have a boatload of talent, and the Padres are likely to sign Sasaki, and the Diamondbacks signed Corbin Burnes – proof of the competition the Giants have to face.
Buster Posey won three World Series titles with the San Francisco Giants, and he knows the team might not always need superstars to succeed. But the talent gap right now is undeniable. Looking back, the Giants in 2021 surprised everyone by winning 107 games and the NL West title. But today, with the teams they are competing with, it seems like the Giants will be in more of a rebuild mode rather than winning for a while now. So, yes, they need star power! How about Roki Sasaki then?
The club misses out on Roki Sasaki
Roki Sasaki was the perfect candidate for the SF Giants. A medium team at this point, just like Sasaki wanted. However, it seems like the Giants were not his choice after all. GM Zack Minasian confirmed that the Giants are no longer in the running. Minasian said, “We met with Roki in person, and as of now we were recently told that we would not be his destination.” A hint of disappointment, indeed!

The SF Giants had high hopes for Sasaki. But despite their efforts, like Posey and the team flying to LA to meet Sasaki last month, they fell short. Posey had talked about Roki Sasaki with great positivity in the winter meeting, saying, “Obviously, like probably all other 29 teams, it would be a dream for us to get this guy. It’s just a tremendous upside, and there are not too many arms in the world like his. He’s a tremendous talent. He’s 23 years old. It’s fun to dream on; it’s fun to think about him at Oracle Park and pitching deep into a game late in the year with the place rocking. We’d be over the moon to add a guy like him.” But just like any other superstar, even Sasaki slipped past them.
Now Roki is expected to announce which team he will choose. Right now the San Diego Padres and the LA Dodgers are deemed as favorites. And wherever he goes, it would be a lottery for the team. A generational pitcher like him, and for such a steal contract—that’s a rare mix!
