After winning two consecutive games against the San Diego Padres, the Milwaukee Brewers started off poorly in the third game of the away series and were trailing by five points at the end of the seventh. Reliever Gus Varland, who made his MLB debut on March 30, Opening Day, came to the mound to complete the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, Manny Machado arrived in the box. And things suddenly took a turn for the worse. Varland threw a slider, and Machado, who signed a $350 million deal with the Padres recently, hit a line drive at 105.1mph straight toward the mound, where Varland stood.

Gus Varland couldn’t get out of the way, and the ball struck his right hand, before getting deflected on his jaw. Varland fell straight on the ground after getting hit, and couldn’t get back up without the support of a few teammates and trainers.

After the game, an update on Gus Varland read that his hand took more of the blow before hitting his jaw. X-Ray results on both his hand and jaw were negative, and Gus too said that he felt okay.

After the game, Varland spoke about getting hit and expressed disappointment about the location of the slider. He said, “I’m more mad about that slider location. It felt good out of my hand, it just didn’t get there.” The 26-year-old continued to add, “It came back at me, hit my hand and my chin and my left forearm. It just kind of rocked me a little bit. I felt fine though. I felt like I could have kept going but I think that’s the adrenaline talking there.”

Twitter was filled with fans hoping for Varland’s speedy recovery:
