The Mets got a pat on their back from 2022 Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. While it is surprising that compliments are coming from a different sport, the opinion of Mahomes matters due to his connection with the Kansas City Royals. Mahomes plays for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL and is also a minor stakeholder in the Royals in MLB. His take on the Mets’ 2025 World Series ambitions hints at the Royals’ own approach to team-building.
While the Mets are on full throttle now following their few big signings, the Royals are yet to make it big this offseason. Mahomes’ Chiefs won the Super Bowl in 2022, while the Royals last captured the World Series title in 2015. So if anything goes by Mahomes’ compliment for the Mets, the Royals are all set to field a contending team for the 2025 World Series. Are the Mets now well-equipped for the World Series? What does Mahomes’ statement mean for the Royals?

The Mets started this offseason with a bang by getting Juan Soto with the biggest deal ever in the MLB’s history. With players like Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo on the team and Pete Alonso, all set to join them, the Mets are the force to contend for the 2025 World Series. They successfully filled their roster gaps despite not going over the top like the Dodgers. There are a few lows also associated with the Mets, like not getting Kirby Yates and Tanner Scott to the team, and gaps like low depth of rotation and an injury-prone pitching squad may haunt them this year as well. So, can the Mets be considered a good team then?

“I think they’ll have a good chance. They have a good team,” said Patrick Mahomes during his Super Bowl media availability. Pointing out last year’s performance of the Mets and how they went further this year in terms of getting big names, Mahomes bet on the Mets getting the World Series. Remember the Mets’ record of clinching the postseason berth for the second time in their last three seasons? Mahomes focused on how the team started from the point they ended up last year. But what does this mean for the Royals? How does Mahomes view their chances this season?

Patrick Mahomes has all the reasons to be concerned for the Royals, considering he is a minor stakeholder there. “Hope my Royals can make a little case for themselves as well,” he said, pointing towards how the Mets planned their 2025 season. Well, the Royals are yet to make noise this offseason, but they are going to get the services of a few top prospects. Bobby Willy Jr. is going to be one of their key assets this year, and their recent signing of veteran Carlos Estevez will strengthen their bullpen. Is that enough for the Royals to contend with the teams like the Mets?
The Mets are ahead of the Royals on paper, and their on-field performance is yet to be tested. Mahomes, although hopeful for doing similar to what the Mets are doing, it is the stark difference in payroll budget between the teams that matters. According to Spotrac, the Royals are 21st in the league with a payroll of $106,187,070, while the Mets’ 2025 payroll is projected to be over $248 million. Hence, going for Soto’s kind of signing is not practical for the Royals. However, with players like Bobby Witt, Jonathan India, and Seth Lugo, fans can bet on the Royals to do wonders this year.
Mahomes’ compliment for the Mets shows his respect for the rival teams and dedication to the Royals. Fans can be hopeful about their team considering the owner is trying to follow the benchmark in the circuit.
