Sports legends aren’t born but crafted. Raw talent is nurtured into greatness right from a young age, as parents and coaches cultivate potential. Alex Rodriguez believes in the same principle. The former New York Yankees slugger is among the best to ever play the game, an MLB legend. But among all the titles he holds, the one he is most proud of is ‘Father’.

After retiring from baseball, A-Rod has taken up many hats and often lends parenting advice here and there. Father of two teenage daughters, Natasha and Ella, whom he shares with ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis, Rodriguez is a family man through and through. But given his professional baseball career, the ex-slugger also values sports. Mixing the two when it comes to kids can be a daunting task, but Rodriguez has a solution.

Almost every parent is familiar with this – trying to get their kids to keep healthy by staying active through extracurricular activities. Interacting with children after their day is over is a must, but some parents mistakenly focus only on results. In an interview with Harry Stebbings, Alex Rodriguez pointed out how this was a wrong practice.

“95% of kids quit their sport on the ride home with their parents. For the parents out there I’d say – be really thoughtful on how those conversations go after practice or after dance. It shouldn’t be like, did you win, did you get an A, did you do this? It should be like, what was the most enjoyable part of your day?” says the retired Yankee.

“Did you work hard? Did you prepare? Did you enjoy? It shouldn’t be about results, results, results because that creates a lot of anxiety for young people. The most important responsibility we have is raising our children. Everyone talks about fixing the world but I think it starts at home.”

It’s all about the climb; the end result always matters, of course, but what’s the point if the journey of getting there was miserable?

Fans Chime In With Their Own Advice

Alex Rodriguez famously has a controversial past, but fortunately, the wrath of fans has cooled down now. On most days, fans miss A-Rod’s presence on the field and interact well with him on social media. This latest post was no different, as many offered him praise for the advice.

“Growth mindset”

Some offered their own advice too. “Absolutely!! …It starts to feel like a “job” for the kid chasing results for their parents. It should be about having fun and developing skills. Let it turn into a “job” once they start getting paid for it.”

“Spot on Alex. First question after a game or practice with my kids is ‘did you have fun?'”

The final score will be important. But for kids, letting them explore the game to their heart’s content, rather than working hard simply for numbers, will always be the right answer.
