On the first day of spring training, the Red Sox’s third baseman made one thing crystal clear—he’s not moving. Period! Despite the team’s high-profile signing of former Astros All-Star Alex Bregman, Rafael Devers is standing firm on his claim to third base.
As MLB insider Jared Carrabis noted, Devers’ blunt stance—essentially telling others to find another position—has caught everyone off guard. But does his confidence make sense? Or is this setting up an unexpected infield dilemma for Boston?
Well, before we move on to the discussion in detail, let’s take a look at Rafael Devers’ performance in 2024. He scored 87 in 138 games, at an average of.272 with 143 hits, 28 homers, and 83 RBIs. While he has been great in his usual third base for the Boston Red Sox, Devers believes that he wants to remain in that position, clarifying a lot of questions during the interview session at Fenway South on Monday.

When asked about his intention in case the Boston Red Sox wants him to play as a designated hitter, Devers clearly said, “No.” Although this news didn’t suddenly emerge from the ashes—the Sox being linked with Alex Bregman throughout the offseason—Devers remains adamant, feeling secure in his current role. During the February 18 episode of Baseball Is Dead, former baseball player and MLB insider Dallas Braden said, “We’ve been very excited about the prospects of what Alex Bregman brings to the table.”

Following this, Braden continued, “Devers has taken here publicly just within the last few minutes, which is you want to play third base, beat it, go somewhere else because I play here, and if you’d like me to DH, you are higher than Dallas because I’m not going to do so.” So, Devers’ intention to play the third base is questioned, given that he was ready to move on to third base for Nolan Arenado but not for Bregman. Indicating his double standards, which may land him in trouble! Although it’s too early to say that, bringing a player of Alex Bregman’s caliber into the team and playing him at the usual third base position makes more sense, though. Agree?
Red Sox’s manager has his say on Rafael Devers’ intention
While Rafael Devers’ adamancy in not changing his position received some criticism, Red Sox’s manager, Alex Cora, did not seem to be very concerned. Cora believes that it’s not just about either Alex Bregman or Rafael Devers; rather, it is all about the team. So, whatever decision is made, it will be in the best interest of the team. While Deevers has been playing the third base since his 2017 debut, he hasn’t been a major defender; however, Cora has praised him for the significant improvements in his defense. But that’s not all!

Alex Cora confirmed Devers playing at the third base; however, decisions would be made accordingly, despite knowing the fact that Alex Bregman would be a major upgrade to their defense. Not only has Bregman come off a Golden Glove season, where he ranked 81st percentile in fielding run value, but also his years of experience would give the Red Sox a major boost in the upcoming games.

While Cora prefers Alex Bregman for the third base, it is yet to be decided whether he can play in his usual position or second base. Do you think Rafael Devers may change his position for Bregman? Do let us know in the comment section below.
