Alex Bregman still remains unsigned! Shocking, isn’t it? The reason? Well, plenty of them, but the biggest is his contract ask. A whopping $200 million is what Bregman and Scott Boras are looking for. The Houston Astros are already out of the sweepstakes. Making situations worse is the fact that Bregman’s 2024 wasn’t on par either. So, several teams are hesitant. And Scott Boras with his post-season antics, is not making it simple.

There’s more. Bregman’s age is also kind of a concern. He is going to be 31, and anyway, in their thirties, players go through declining performances. But there is still hope. Teams, like the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox, seem to be in the race now. Ken Rosenthal, in fact, recently said in Foul Territory that Bergman seems to be a logical choice for the Red Sox. But however logical that decision, hesitation is the name of the game. And Foul Territory’s Scott Braun sums it up best—a game of chicken he says!

Can Boston seal the deal with Bregman?

Alex Bregman, though, comes with natural concerns of age and injury, his resume is strong. He has two World Series rings, multiple All-Star appearances, a Silver Slugger, and a Gold Glove. His veteran hand could add value to any team. Scott Braun from Foul Territory said it’s a game of chicken and though they want the player, they don’t want to commit. It is not just the amount he is asking for but the years are also an issue. Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball quotes at least for Bregman to get a six-year, $168 million deal.

However, in the same show, Todd Frazier expresses how he feels that Boston is a no-brainer for Alex Bregman. “It’s a great fit,” said Frazier. And he mentioned how Boston as a team is on the rise. Plus, they have been bringing in new players to show for it. Hence, getting a player like Bregman only makes perfect sense in the lineup. All Todd Frazier is asking for is a little patience.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Bregman's $200 million ask justified, or is he overestimating his worth in today's market?

Granted, fans want the signing to happen as quickly as possible, but Frazier says sometimes these deals can take days and months. However, while he believes Boston is the perfect fit, he also questions where Bregman would fit in the lineup with Devers there – “But you also think about Rafael Devers. He is a beast, so is he willing to move? I think he’d be fine with it.” Well, Bregman can mash and play defense, and he is a beast under pressure. So if Boston gets him, even if there is a little shift in the lineup, it’s well worth it.

Besides, Alex Cora’s history as Bregman’s bench coach in Houston is also a factor. A reunion feels like the logical thing right now.

Jon Heyman doubts Red Sox’s chances at landing Alex Bregman

While Ken Rosenthal might think Boston and Bregman make the best team, Jon Heyman doesn’t. For the insider, the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers make more sense. “I’m going to leave the Red Sox on my list for Bregman…but I don’t think that’s the most likely scenario.” For him, the other two teams are pushing hard for a third baseman, and Bregman fits better there. And there are reasons.

Firstly, Boston hasn’t spent that much money in a while now. They have a great farm system, and that’s been their focus. Secondly, even if they do end up splurging, the issue is whether their star Devers would move. If he shifts to first base, where does Triston Casas go? The Red Sox have been clear about not wanting to move their primary first baseman. So this puts Boston in a spot. Whereas the Blue Jays and Tigers have the freedom to spend big and also have a clearer opening for Bregman.

But don’t count the Red Sox out yet. Former Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden mentioned on the Baseball is Dead podcast that Boston has a way to sway Bregman. He thinks that the Red Sox could offer Bregman a better shot at staying competitive. That he feels gives Boston an edge over the rest.

Well, the days are passing, and no resolutions seem to be coming. Right now the games of chicken should stop, and one side needs to budge. Who do you think will make their move first, the Red Sox or Bregman?
