Were the trade rumors true? – It seems like that at least for the Japanese designated hitter, Masataka Yoshida, the trade rumors were merely speculation. After a difficult 2024 season due to multiple injuries, Yoshida’s fandom sensed tension between the left fielder and the Red Sox front office. However, fans can take a sigh of relief because the 31-year-old is staying with the Crimson Hose.
On January 12th, amidst Yoshida’s trade conjectures, Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed that the Japanese star would play in the outfield again this season. However, Yoshida played only one inning as an outfielder in the 2024 season. On top of it, a thumb injury limited him to just 108 games last year.
When asked about Yoshida’s limited role by reporters, Cora cleared the air and said that Yoshida’s role in the team exclusively as a DH and not getting any chance to play in outfield was not because of his injury. Cora stated, “Yeah, our outfield defense was great last year, but in a perfect world if he was healthy, he was going to play the outfield. The throwing part of it wasn’t there so that’s the reason he actually didn’t play. Hopefully, we can get him there and we can use him in the outfield, too.”

In the wake of his injuries, Yoshida was only able to hit .280 with 10 homers, 21 doubles, 56 RBI, and 45 runs scored. This was before he underwent surgery to repair a labrum tear in his right shoulder in the month of October.

Nevertheless, following the surgery, the Red Sox expressed their optimism that the 31-year-old should be ready for the spring training. But that will depend on how much timeframe would it take for Yoshida’s recovery.
Masataka Yoshida looks forward to join back the diamond
Masataka Yoshida is very optimistic about his return and wants to make it to the opening day. He is very close to picking up the slugger and starting his dry swings. And regarding his trade rumors, Yoshida himself has acknowledged that the rumors about his transfers are “out of [his] control.” Hence, it is clear that the Boston Red Sox is not transferring him for the final three years of his contract (Masataka Yoshida signed a deal of $18.6 million per season with the Boston Red Sox till 2027).

Interestingly, the Red Sox have a roster of outfielders already filled with robust talents like Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and Rob Refsnyder. On top of that, they have an impressive prospect in Roman Anthony who is anticipated to compete for playing time. Masataka Yoshida’s addition will enhance and strengthen their defensive lineup.
