The Boston Red Sox putting out everything on Alex Bregman doesn’t seem right, according to Boston Insider Chris Cotillo. Alex Bregman, an All-Star for the Houston Astros, is having trouble finding the ideal landing spot as the sweepstakes are going down quickly. However, the Red Sox have still kept their doors open for him and are trying to spend huge to bring him onto their roster. But does that make sense?
Well, Alex Bregman has had an absolutely outstanding season with the Houston Astros. Bregman had a 375/.490/.750 slash line, posted 1.240 OPS, and has been part of the World Series wins in 2017 and 2022. He has been a two-time All-Star and even won the Silver Slugger Award and Gold Glove Award, which makes him a great asset that every team wants to own. However, the Red Sox should have gone for other players as well rather than spending huge amounts on him.
The Red Sox shall look beyond Alex Bregman

The Houston Astros’ All-Star free agent, Alex Bregman, sought a minimum of a six-year, $200 million contract, to which teams disagreed. The reason is that he is 30 years old and will turn 31 in March, and there are uncertainties about his performance in the next 3 to 4 years. He even rejected the six-year, $156 million deal offered by the Astros.
Now, since the Red Sox are targeting him, a top MLB insider, Chris Cotillo, said, “I’ve been on record saying I think Bregman is imperfect and the deal may not age well. I would have prioritized Teoscar and O’Neill over him, which they didn’t. But now it’s: You have the money; just spend it and upgrade. At some point the Gaslight Express has to make a stop.” He believes that spending too much on Bregman isn’t the right thing to do; eventually, the Red Sox may lose some better players for a lesser amount.

While Alex Bregman’s record of.260/.315/.453/.768, 26 home runs and 30 doubles in the last season do make him a valuable asset, Cotillo pointed out his increasing age that might come into play if the Red Sox sign him for a long-term contract. He went on to add that the club would have spent on Teoscar Hernandez and Tyler O’Neill, who could have brought something more to the table that too for a comparatively lesser amount of money. But what makes us think so?
Well, Tyler O’Neill, in his last season, had a.241 batting average with 847 OPS, 31 home runs, 61 RBIs, and four stolen bases in 113 games. On the other hand, Teoscar Hernandez posted 33 home runs and averaged 272 with 99 RBIs and.840 OPS, thus making both of them prominent outfielders that the Red Sox would have given priority. Cotillo is optimistic that the Red Sox will make some wise investments and enhance the team now that they have the money they want.

The Astros look to retain their All-Star Alex Bregman
While the Alex Bregman sweepstakes have declined largely as he finds no takers, the Red Sox have come up with a new short-term offer for him. However, given that Bregman is not looking for anything below six years, the Houston Astros can be the only team to get him back on their roster. Joe Espada, the manager of the Astros, has expressed his interest in retaining him, while their star player, Joe Altuve, has also come in support of him. But will that be possible?
Well, as per Jose Altuve, he is ready to sacrifice his position at the second base to accommodate Bregman in their lineup. Altuve’s astounding record at the second base is praiseworthy, as he made 229 home runs and possesses a batting average of.306 along with 315 stolen bases. However, the thought of losing Bregman, who has been a major contributor for the Astros, makes him compromise, and he is ready to move on to left field.
