Ten back-to-back games at their home stadium—the longest stretch of consecutive home games, yet Boston failed to utilize it. It was truly a perfect opportunity for the Boston Red Sox to work on their gaping holes and finally step forward more strongly for the remainder of the season. But what happened? They couldn’t even make the most of this opportunity. At least, that’s how it appeared in their recent games. Especially against the Baltimore Orioles, who are arguably the worst team in the league right now.
During Sunday’s game at Fenway Park, the Red Sox finished up the homestand with a plain 5-5 record. Meanwhile, the Orioles were coming off eight losses out of their last nine games. And the results? It was a four-game split series, as the Red Sox were handed a brutal 5-1 defeat by the Orioles. The Sox couldn’t record any scores till the ninth inning. They made painful blunders throughout the game. At this point, their bullpen is drained from logging over 32 innings across just seven matchups.

In the eighth inning, their errors were so baffling that the internet took over and compared the Red Sox to a Little League baseball. Apparently, Gunnar Henderson walked and made his way to third base when O’Hearn hit a double. Then, Ceddanne Rafaela made a throwback into the infield. However, it missed the cutoff man and hit O’Hearn and rolled away. That is exactly the mistake that allowed Henderson to score.
Soon after, Marcelo Mayer picked up the ball and attempted to throw it off to O’Hearn at third. His throw was oddly high; just like that, O’Hearn scored too. It is safe to say that Mayer’s call-up to the big leagues was a silver lining for the Red Sox. He singled in the second inning. It was his first major league hit. He even doubled in the ninth. He was able to score on a single by Abraham Toro.
However, the Red Sox overall looked bad. They came across as nothing like an MLB team. If anything, they looked more like a Little League team unsure of the basics. This was the comparison drawn by MLB fans. Mayer came out promising; however, he alone couldn’t patch up the damage.
The Red Sox fans reacted to the team’s collapse
It was a split series against the Orioles, who are already labeled as the worst team in the league. They are currently at 18-34. Whereas, the Sox have hovered around .500 for the entire season. And the Red Sox fans have had enough of consistent losing. Venting on X, all MLB fans collectively slammed them for their poor performance.
What’s your perspective on:
Are the Red Sox truly worse than the Orioles, or is this just a temporary slump?
Have an interesting take?
Those who have been following the Red Sox for a while were able to sum up their whole season. “Yep, that is the Red Sox season in a nutshell, isn’t it?” The Red Sox now stand at 27-28 despite having remarkable aces such as Rafael Devers, Kristian Campbell, Wilyer Abreu, David Hamilton, Nick Sogard, and Rafaela. FYI, these players combined went 0-for-20 against the Orioles. Naturally, fans were not even remotely shocked at their blunders; they saw it coming given their recent performances.
However, if you’ve been a die-hard fan all along, it’s tough to see your favorite team down in the dumps. “The Red Sox legit suck, and it’s very disappointing as a fan.” Don’t worry; even manager Alex Cora accepts it. He has reportedly said, “We’re still playing where we are at—an average team.” Well, at least right now they look below average.

This time against the Orioles, the Red Sox’s pitching was simply comical. “Little league team,” a fan noted. It was a total collapse of the basics. Everything from defense to pitching and even their strategy, was questioned. They seemed nothing like a professional baseball team. It’s humorous, wrapped in sadness, that they’re compared to a Little League team.

Even so, their rivals became the benchmark for the fans. “The Red Sox are worse than the Orioles.” Shame has officially hit its highest level. According to the Red Sox’s Jarren Duran, the team is ‘grinding’ currently. However, the team looked nothing like they had been working hard. Fans have started seeing the Red Sox as even worse than the Orioles at this stretch of the season.
The Red Sox have officially lost many of their fans. “So I don’t think I’ve verbally said something bad about my favorite team, the Red Sox, until now.” The fan here was hesitant to say anything bad about the team. After all, there was a time when the Sox didn’t look like this. It’s been just disappointing collectively for all.
The fans are not even making a fuss anymore. They aren’t complaining. They are just done. Even a winning streak isn’t capable of picking the team up. However, the Red Sox are currently making some major shifts in their lineup. Moreover, they’re bringing Roman Anthony up to the majors. If it all works out well, you never know if they will finally come out stronger.
