The MLB Polar Bear has hit some roadblocks, with the New York Mets’ stance growing against him amid his links with the Toronto Blue Jays. With the offseason ending soon, Pete Alonso could not find a perfect landing destination. It’s quite surprising for a player of his caliber. While he has been long associated with the Mets, Pete doesn’t seem to be the likely choice anymore for them. But why is that so?

Well, as per reports, in 2023, Pete Alonso rejected a long-term offer by the Mets—a six-year, $158 million deal. Again, with his rejection of a three-year, $68 to $70 million deal by the Mets amid his cooling sweepstakes, the Mets have turned their back on him. Although it may leave a gap in the first base for the Mets, another team’s name is coming up that is looking for Alonso—the Toronto Blue Jays, maybe?

After becoming the free agent, the New York Mets’ All-Star is looking for something around $200 million, which the teams aren’t willing to offer. The reason is that Pete will turn 31 in March, and there are uncertainties about how he may perform in the next 2 or 3 years. Despite a longer contract in 2023 and a three-year deal worth $70 million, Scott Boras feels the offers aren’t worth the value of his agent, Pete Alonso. However, the fans say otherwise, as they believed it to be a pretty good deal. But Pete’s stubbornness can soon land him in an uncomfortable situation of accepting much less than he once envisioned.

Steve Cohen, the owner of the Mets, also seems unhappy with the negotiations; however, he confirms his flexibility in case Pete changes his mind and wants to get back to the Mets. A top MLB insider, Andy Martino, on January 28 said, “There’s no reason for the Mets to rush. The final Mets offer that Alonso turned down, that’s going to be tough for him to beat with the Blue Jays.”

So, according to him, since the talks are stalled at the moment, the Mets do not need to rush for him as the Blue Jays may not offer such a hefty amount that they offered him earlier.

Is Pete Alonso overestimating his worth, or are the Mets undervaluing a key player?

Martino continued by saying that the extra deferred money for the Mets’ $70 million offer might have been great. He even said it is unlikely Pete Alonso would get a higher price than what the Mets offered because the Blue Jays have already spent on Anthony Santander. Now, with the spring training to start soon, Pete Alonso will have to make a call soon.

However, the Toronto Blue Jays have still kept their door open for him. But will that be possible?

Toronto Blue Jays are keen to have Alonso in their lineup

The Polar Bear still has trouble finding a team willing to sign a contract for over six years, but the Mets have stuck to their guns. They have even named Mark Vientos as a possible replacement for him. However, because they need a power hitter, the Toronto Blue Jays appear aggressive in their pursuit of Pete.

Pete Alonso had a batting average of.240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs, and.788 OPS in 2024, which makes him a perfect fit for them. The Blue Jays finished last in AL East, making 74-88, and that’s the reason they have offered him something around the $75 million mark for three years. But will that be enough for him?

Pete Alonso is still undecided because he waits for the Mets to make a respectful offer. Currently, negotiations between Pete and the Blue Jays have reached a standstill. Likewise, the Los Angeles Dodgers have unexpectedly entered the picture and are engaged in discussions. Although they still have the highest offer on his table, fans speculate the deal will be done soon. Thus, it can open a new opportunity to sign Max Scherzer too.
