The Atlanta Braves were one of the dominant sides in the 2023 season. They finished the season as the NL East champions, but their loss in the Division Series raised questions. It included the ability of their squad to handle difficult situations to become a World Series champion team. Given the 2023 season did not look that way, the Braves wanted to change it with a solid off-season, and have shown the same in the latest signing.

According to a press release, the Braves have signed LHP Ray Kerr and DH Matt Carpenter from the San Diego Padres to bolster their squad. Were the signings solely driven by the numbers put by the players? If not, what significance does this addition hold for the 2021 World Series Champions?

The Braves, with a press release, confirmed their intent to become better with signings of LHP Ray Kerr and Matt Carpenter. They shared, “The Atlanta Braves today acquired LHP Ray Karr, DH Matt Carpenter, and cash considerations from San Diego Padres in exchange for minor-league OF Drew Campbell.”

With this, the 3x All-Star has become part of the talent-rich squad. He hopes to use his experience and give them an edge in the upcoming campaign. However, it would also require him to step up his game after a disastrous 2023 season. Notably, the 38-year-old finished with an average of 0.176, five home runs, 31 RBIs, and an OPS of 0.641.

Though the numbers are surprising, his vast experience is a big plus, which adds to Carpenter’s joining the squad along with Ray Kerr. Notably, Kerr recorded 35 strikeouts in 2023 at an ERA of 4.33, adding value to the rotation. But if the numbers were not the entire reason behind their signings, what does this inclusion mean to the 2021 World Series Champions?

A Budgetary Move From the Braves With an Eye on Future

The 2023 season was a lesson for teams that only spending big is not a step to success. Money gets you the best players, but smart spending is a way forward. The Braves have understood this and to make this they have signed players with a lot to offer at minimal cost.

Notably, the former champions are on a $206 million payroll, almost double the league’s average. With teams looking for budget cuts, it can go lower. Thus, the Braves who have spent much this off-season, did not want to spend more and needed options without much stress on the pocket.

This is why signing Carpenter and Kerr works for them, with both to cost less than seven million dollars if one goes by previous contract terms. Thus, the deals make sense, with one coming more than a decade of MLB career behind and another yet to reach his prime. What do you think about it? Let us know in the comments.
