Injuries may be part of an athlete’s life, but it doesn’t make them any easier to witness. They’re especially horrifying to watch when they happen to players not even involved on the field. This is exactly what took place yesterday at the San Francisco Giants vs the Milwaukee Brewers game.

Willy Adames was standing by the dugout, observing the game, when he was hit in the face by a foul ball. Officials immediately stopped the clock so that medics could check up on him. They led him out to receive proper treatment, and the game resumed, but the Brewers weren’t up to their usual mark. Thankfully, team manager Craig Counsell recently gave an update.

It was the top of the second inning when the Brewers’ Brian Anderson’s attempted line drive accidentally went toward the dugout. As soon as they saw the ball coming, everyone standing there immediately protected their face but Willy Adames wasn’t so lucky. As the ball hit him in the face, he staggered back to the benches, obviously in pain. Videos of the incident showed the shortstop’s red face but thankfully he remained conscious.

Anderson looked visibly distraught as he crouched at the plate, waiting for some news of his teammate. Even the Giants’ Alex Wood, the pitcher who stood at the mound, looked worried as he kept his eyes on the Brewers’ dugout. The game resumed as medical professionals led Adames off the field. But worry for their teammate obviously affected the Milwaukee team’s performance as the Giants won 15-1.

“He was alert and responsive as he left, and then we got pretty good news at the hospital, too,” Counsell said later. “Obviously, he’s in pain. But I think overall I think not bad news, considering how scary it was…Anticipate him being released tomorrow morning. It’ll be a concussion. It’ll be an IL.”
